My son was admitted and we’d love to go, as I suspect it’d help him make his decision about whether to attend, but unfortunately have a major conflict on the only day it seems to be offered. We’re wondering how much we’ll miss. The schedule isn’t specific about what the “student experience” sessions are.
He’s going to attend a reception that’s being held in our area for accepted students (we’re OOS), but I can’t imagine it’ll provide the same info as what he could get during an admitted student day. Has anyone attended both? Opinions?
We’re bummed that this is only being held on one day!
I attended Admitted Students Day two years ago with my son. He was accepted into the College of Engineering, and we only went to events in that College. It was good to attend, as he also was deciding between CU (his in-state option) and an out of state school that offered him a large merit scholarship. We did not attend any of the presentations for A&S or the other colleges, so I cannot speak to those.
The big thing that he decided on that day was which dorm he would live in. And, he made the decision to attend CU after we travelled to the other school on their Admitted Student Day. We were very impressed with the presentations given by the engineering dean/faculty at CU.
But, having said all of this, I do not think it’s absolutely necessary to go on that day. In fact, I think the day can kind of be a hit or miss depending on which presentations you choose to go to. If you think he needs to see CU again, and you can swing it, how about flying out on another weekend in April. He could attend a couple of classes, talk to people in the dept. he’s hoping to be in, visit the dorms again, and just get another feel for the campus.
If you have any questions about the dorms or the RAPs, please ask, as I’m pretty familiar with them. My son lives in Kittridge Central and is part of the Global Engineering RAP.
I went to the admitted students day with my D when she was a freshman. There were some fun activities and we sat in on programs like “study abroad” and “honors college.” All in all, I would say it wasn’t that much more valuable than a regular visit with an info session and campus tour. I guess the main difference is that your kid is not meeting other potential future students and interacting with them. He may also want to sit in on a class and do an overnight (if they provide that).
Have you already visited? If not, I’d highly suggest it. The campus is beautiful (just ignore the engineering buildings). I’d say CU certainly has it’s own kind of vibe and that differs from area to area on the campus. And don’t forget Boulder!
Thank you, @snoozn - we did do a visit and campus tour (and even though we’re OOS no, I’m from Colorado, so I’m pretty familiar with Boulder.) I was wondering how different the admitted student day is. This is good info! We are going to attend an admitted student reception near where we live. Hopefully my son can get the info he needs to make a decision.
