yes, everything you need is on campus and if want to go out farther, the fare for the bus is only $1. you’ll most likely need the bus to get from the train to wherever your hotel is. the bus system goes everywhere you’ll need to go.

I wouldn’t recommend the train if you’re flying into O’hare. Renting a car would be best. If it has a GPS, even better. Type in the address of the hotel, and go. If you simply don’t want to drive in Chicago traffic, then there is bus service directly from O’hare to the heart of the UIUC campus. The train station, on the other hand is about 3/4 of a mile from campus. Also, I highly recommend staying at the Illini Union hotel. That is located on the quad, which is at the heart of the campus. My son uses the LEX bus service to get both there and back to Chicago. If you stay at the Illini Union, you really won’t need a car to get around, but the campus is vast, so bring your walking shoes.

Balthazar - Thank you for the bus and hotel info. We had reservation for The iHotel, which looks more modern and newer but now, think about the location, seems Union is a better choice. Already change to Union. Thank you.

One more question, can you recommend a place for dinner (of course near the campus, we won’t drive)? I knew there are recommendation on UIUC website but I just like to have some more suggestions from parent or student. Thanks.

There are many restaurants in and around the Green Street Campustown area that are right off the quad and within walking distance of Illini Union. It depends on what you want, but remember that most cater to a student crowd more interested in cheap and filling, as opposed to fine dining. They also tend to be on the noisy side, which also appeals to the students who want to blow off a little steam after a full day of classes and study. It depends on what you’re looking for. I like Panera Bread for a quieter atmosphere, and it’s just a few doors off the corner of Wright Street on Green. They’ve got great sandwiches, soups and salads.

The best thing to do when you get down there is to walk around the Green Street/Campustown area. Don’t forget to walk down the side streets. There are many restaurants that you can choose from.

I follow this thread for a while. I will go form the open house too.
When I tried to book the bus ticket on line last night, the price is much higher than train. For one way, train is $14 but bus, $29 and when check out, the put fuel surcharge $7 for each ticket. To save some money, my friend and I will stay three more hours there after the open house and take the late train.

Hope we can find something interesting for those two days.

For those of you who have accepted your offer of admisssion and are definitely coming and are from OOS, you’ll get enough of a look at the campus at your orientation in early summer. Classes won’t be in session, but you’ll have plenty of time then to ask questions, walk around and register for fall classes. Flying into O’Hare and taking a bus/train to campus is maybe a good idea if you haven’t made up your mind yet about attending or visited campus, I suppose…

The train is cheaper, but the buses are much more convenient. Especially for those coming into O’hare, and who have never been to Chicago before. Going back to O’hare it is equally inconvenient to take the train. You end up in downtown Chicago at 11pm. You could then cab it to the airport, but that’ll cost you more than the difference in the price of the bus ticket.

Every time we go down to UIUC , we have eaten at mia za’s. You make up your own salad, or pannini or pizza. and good soup, too. No, not haute cuisine, but we like the variety that is possible. I think it is real close to the quad.

I have a question about the subject shindig this Friday, mar 11. What is it? If someone can provide a link about it , that would be great. Why is it not on a Saturday?

My wife saw it on the calendar and brought it up today. My son said he does nt want to miss HS for it. Is it worth missing HS? He is a conscientious student and does not like getting behind. I am sure his HS would grant and excuse for this, tho.

I see that some are coming in on the big jet airliner. Sell this day to him - why should he go? Note - He has not picked UIUC yet. He is from the Chicago area and it would therefore be a drive down that day.
