@ajs28152 A current UMN student called me a few days ago and when I asked about honors college notification she said that they only notify people who get into the honors college by March 31st. If you didn’t hear back by yesterday (assuming the letter didn’t get lost in the mail or went on an adventure) it means you did not get in.
@akozia Thanks! I’m actually out of town visiting colleges so it could be there and I just haven’t seen it yet. That’s what I hope
S will be declining his spot in CSE shortly as well (committed to Purdue) so another open spot for the WL crowd…
FYI, for all those out of state students, this might make you want to reconsider. Tuition is about to be hiked up over the next 4 years.
http://www.twincities.com/2016/02/12/umn-tuition-target-12800-nonresident-hike-over-four-years/
@collegebound337 That doesn’t affect incoming freshman. It will go up by 2-3k for freshman this year but once in the university the prices each year remain constant. Hope you know that.
Also, the price will be similar to all other Big Ten schools once the increase takes place during the next 4 years. It was anyway much cheaper.
@Nestle99 said: “once in the university the prices each year remain constant”.
This is incorrect, at least for OOS and non-reciprocity state students. I just called admissions to inquire based on Nestle99’s comment and my hopes were dashed!
@msd228 This article is true then??
@msd228 You don’t understand. (Or I think you don’t) The prices of OOS tuition will increase for the next 4 years. However, say you join the university for the fall 2016 and pay 30k as tuition (this is a rough figure and it includes a 4k increase). For the next four years, YOUR cost will be approx the same! It might go up for YOU (and all other students) a few thousand dollars in the second or third year because all colleges charge a little more in your junior and senior year.
So you’ll be paying 30-35k for ALL YOUR 4 years even if the tuition increases to 40k. That 40k only applies for the incoming freshman class for fall 2017 or 2018 onwards. Hope you understand now.
Don’t quote me out of context. I said University prices remain the same for a student who’s enrolled and paying X tuition for the first year. Even if in the second year (fall 2017), price goes up by X + 6k, an enrolled student coming from the first year at the same University into the second year WILL continue to pay X (+ 1 or 2k more). Students who transfer into or join fall 2017 will pay the X + 6k.
All the stats in this passage are made up. I’m just giving people here an example of the process by which tuition increases and how it won’t affect certain people.
@collegebound337 the article is most probably true. However, I hope you got the point of what I’m saying. The increases in your second ot third or fourth won’t affect you much if you have enrolled and continue before the increase in tuition takes place.
For anyone that has been waitlisted, have you noticed a change on the app tracker? There use to be a long explanation of the decision stating that you have been put on the waitlist and that they will notify you by April 15th and that you should be prepared with other college options in the event that they are not able to offer you a spot in the freshman class, etc. Today, my son’s app tracker just states this:
An update on the status of your application will be provided by April 15.
@BrewCrew82 Hadn’t checked in a while but, yes, my son’s changed to the one sentence as well.
@Nestle99 said “YOUR cost will be approx the same! It might go up for YOU (and all other students) a few thousand dollars in the second or third year because all colleges charge a little more in your junior and senior year.”
This is quite different from than your first statement that “once in the university the prices each year remain constant”. What you appear to be saying that incoming students will be subject to tuition increases each year, albeit at different rates perhaps than students who matriculate in subsequent years? Or that the amount will seem smaller since it will be calculated on a lower number to begin with? What is the point of that argument?
At our instate school, the tuition that will be cahrged each year is the same as the amount that was charged in your first year of attendance. That, to me, is the meaning of “once in the university the prices each year remain constant”.
My son was waitlisted back in February and received an email yesterday that he was denied. Not overly surprised. He is OOS, had great EC’s including a paid internship in an accounting department, president of FBLA (state qualifier 2 yrs in a row), 28 on ACT. However, had a 3.2 UW GPA (significantly improved since his Sophomore year).
Good news is he was accepted at UW- La Crosse, UW - Eau Claire, and Iowa State and has decided to go to Iowa State. He decided to go to Iowa State after he was denied by UW-Madison a few weeks ago and probably would not have decided to go to Minnesota even if he had received an acceptance.
If you have been waitlisted and are checking your App tracker for an updated status, you will not find it there. They will send an email to whatever email you gave them (my son’s app tracker still states that he will receive an update by April 15th).
@BrewCrew82 thank you for your update. Congrats to your son on his admissions to UW-LC, UW-EC and Iowa State!
I have been trying to keep up with your posts as my son is a junior and will likely be applying to all the same schools as your son. Those three as safety/matches, and also UMN and UW as likely reaches.
I wish there were threads for information on UW-Lacrosse and UW-Eau Claire. Please update when you can on the Iowa State forum. Thanks!
Sorry in advance for this extremely long post, but I want to give prospective students the most comprehensive look into an accepted student’s profile.
Late in the game here, but here’s the news:
Accepted to College of Biological Sciences in early December (applied 10/05/15)
Major: Microbiology
Out of State
ACT: 28 (29 superscore, although I don’t think that Minnesota does that) with a 10 in writing
SAT: Horrible so I didn’t send it
Class rank: 123/975 weighted GPA or about top 12-13%
weighted GPA: 4.6471 (on a scale of 1-6; 6 being an ‘A’ in an Honors or AP course)
unweighted GPA: 3.7255
Race/Ethnicity: White & Puerto Rican
6 AP classes taken by the end of Senior year - Lang & Comp (4), U.S. History (4), Physics 1 (2 - yikes, I know I know, but I got a C in that class both semesters…hated that class so much. Test was also new and our teachers did not prepare us for the actual for structure and content of the test - no one’s fault because no one knew), currently enrolled in Calc AB, Bio, and Lit & Comp
Honors and accelerated courses whenever possible throughout high school
Was in ‘regular’ math (not a year ahead) until I took Trig/Pre-Calc over the summer between my Junior/Senior year, so now I’m enrolled in Calc…I think this bumped up my chances of getting into the college by being on the advanced math track
Extracurricular/Activities: Cross Country (10-12), Orchestra (9-12), Menagerie Lit Staff (school art & lit magazine, 10-12), Fiddle Club (bluegrass music group, founder, social media admin, 9-12), GEMS (Girls STEM club…was not really up and running until the end of my Junior year so I’ve only been in it since grade 12), recently made it into NHS but not in time for my college apps
Volunteer work: Barker Shop Rescue Volunteer (2-4 hours a week year round depending on the time of year, 10-12), Child care provider at church (1 hour a week year round, 9-12), Summer Reading Program volunteer at library (4 hours a week for 8 weeks during the summer of my Junior year)
Job: Personal Assistant for a retired Psychologist (3-6 hours a week, year round, 11-12)
Essay: none because I filled out the Golden Gophers app; my Lit & Comp teacher gave me a 90% as a grade on the essay I sent out for the Common App if that helps anyone
Before applying, I was really confident that I would get into this specific college…I had no idea that it was one of the most (if not THE most) competitive colleges at UMN and I’m also OOS which puts me at a disadvantage. This is my dream school so I’m obviously happy with my acceptance, but I hope I’ll be able to keep pace with all the amazing people who were accepted.
ONE LAST THING:
I recently go my FASFA form back and my tuition and fees are at the in-state rate…but I never received any notification that I got a scholarship. We already contacted One-Stop when I visited in early March and they said they would check right away if there was a problem, but nothing has changed on the form…HELP! In-state tuition would be a huge help - $26,000 vs. $39,000
Got in off the wait list!! Found out through email tonight!
How do you decline an offer of admission?
You have to call a special number. Can’t decline online. Contact Admissions and get the number to call. There is also an Accept-or-decline form in your admissions packet so if you get that in the mail today they might receive it by Monday.
Hey (sorry a bit late, got accepted in Jan tho)
