Tracker had a single line message late Friday and notice was posted on Saturday of acceptance.
Stats for those who are wondering:
In State
ACT 31 (not that it matters to the U supposedly but his superscore would have been 33)
UW GPA 3.93
PSEO 2 years, 1 at UMN
He will enter with 64 credits complete
@CAmom01 you submitted on 10-5 and you have an answer? Did you submit directly to the U or did you submit via te common app or other?
Just curious. My kid submitted 9-26 via the common app. There is discussion on the other thread on glitches with the application process and I’m wondering if applying directly is possibly more stream lined?
There is a back story. Submitted Golden Gopher app on same day as twin on Sept 23. The applications got merged through the system (found out 10/1 when DD called about not receving her tracker) and the university was working on separating them. This was finally complete on Friday, 10/5. Answer was in on Monday morning when she was getting technical support to log in to the tracker as that part was still not working until Monday. They currently are working on DS app to make sure it is all correct. I do know that many Carlson announcments came out on SAT, Mon, Tues. Other colleges weren’t released for friends who applied earlier from what we have heard. Maybe they release in waves by colleges?
Each college can do their own waves of admissions; there are probably also waves by region or even school. At this early stage, the strongest stats are going to be admitted first. If you are a bit of a reach for your first choice of college, you may not hear back for awhile. That’s not bad news, especially if you are a shoe-in for college choice #2 (stats, your interest level, fit, etc.). It just means they are holding onto your app. a bit longer to see if they can place you in your first choice.
Son admitted to Carlson this weekend with somewhat “regular” stats…In-State, GPA UW 3.7, ACT 28, Limited ECs (but worked 15 hours/wk during school), took Honors classes when available but no APs or PSEO. Just wanted to give people some proof that “normal” kids can get into Carlson. Yes, he did well in school but he’s definitely not at the top of his class. Sometimes these forums can get out of control and you think your kid needs to take 25 AP classes, have 100 college credits walking in the door, and be captain of the football/basketball/baseball team just to have a shot. That is definitely not true. Now this doesn’t mean everyone will get in, but take a deep breath…everything will work out how it’s supposed to and your kid will find the college program that’s right for him/her. Don’t lose sleep over the one time they got a B- in a class or get caught up in not having perfect stats.
@SleepyGuy Congrats to your son and I completely agree with what you are saying. However, a 3.7 UW gpa and a 28 ACT is not regular, it’s definitely above average and something your son should be VERY proud of. Carlson’s middle 50% of ACT scores for 2018 was 28-32 so that says that 25% are lower that are admitted.
I’d like to think that not having perfect stats also leads to a more well rounded child. One that will know how to get through the challenges of college, which there are many and will be able to accept a B or C as a good grade without giving up. The problem is that the U has to start somewhere and knowing what has happened in the past or this year is a great indicator. I don’t think it’s anyone’s intention to brag (at least I hope not), but to help others so I appreciate your post.
Completely agree with your thoughts regarding well-rounded students @UMNMom ! I know the stats I quoted were above average when compared to all students and schools, but they are definitely average when looking at Carlson. I also wanted to provide what might be a more middle-of-the-road perspective. Who knows if my son was on the bubble or safely in?..but at least this gives someone some data points to balance against the other stats quoted on this forum and others. GPA and ACT are more concrete/objective data point thresholds that are available in all of the brochures and marketing materials. However, there are no specific guidelines on if Honors classes are valued over AP or PSEO…or how many ECs do I need to get in? The intention of my post was to help reduce the anxiety of someone who satisfies the GPA and ACT thresholds, but feels they may not measure up on some of the “intangibles”.
One additional concrete threshold for Carlson is that one year each of Bio, Chem, and Physics is required.
There is no way for UMN to mandate specific academic thresholds other than the minimum college prep. requirements mentioned on the website (with the additional science for some of the colleges of entry . . . ), simply because high schools don’t all offer the same level of advanced curriculum. PSEO, College in the Schools, or AP/IB might not be available in some schools or districts - others will graduate kids who’ve taken 15 AP courses. It can be all over the place. Nor does Admissions expect you to take an advanced course and be out of your depth - sticking with Honors or even Regular when it’s appropriate can be a demonstration of wisdom and proper discernment. They can tell who is challenging him/herself and who is slacking off for senior year. NB: we personally haven’t met many who are in the latter category, although I’m sure they exist. And of course there’s Senior Slide but that’s a later temptation.
@SleepyGuy First, congrats! Second, thanks for posting that. My OOS son has a 3.3+ and a 31 ACT (first sitting, prepped on his own). His GPA is respectable considering the intensity of the HS…but we send few kids to Minnesota. So we sit back and wait.
Congrats to your son! My son has similar stats so I’m praying he gets in as well. Did your son send in any supplemental material with his app? (e.g. letter of rec or essay)
I’m happy to report my son was admitted into Minnesota Carlson School of Management today. His application was complete about a week ago, so that’s a quick decision. He had 3.6 in all honors at prep school, 33 on ACT, strong activities and out-of-state. We are impressed with Carlson - seems like an excellent program. It’s so nice to get the news of an admission so early in process - takes pressure of the kid.
