Admitted Students Reception

Recently got invited to a few Admitted Students Receptions from different schools. Is this supposed to be something formal - Will I have to dress up for this? :S

Nope…atleast the ones I went for were very informal…

Formal? As in tuxedo or formal dress?

Absolutely not. Jacket for men wouldn’t be out of place. Nice casual would not be out of place either. For you and your parents. You may get some people there in business attire as they are arriving there after work (my alma mater’s is next week at 5:30 – not going to go home to change before I attend) but don’t stress about it.

Jeans probably would feel too casual but no one will bar your entrance or sneer at you or anything. LOL

They are primarily sales pitches You can dress as you wish they are trying to sell the school to you not the other way around

They indeed serve that function. They also serve to have you and your family to meet other families and admitted students. If you decide to attend, they may become good resources.

But to say “wear what you want” – they are trying to pitch you – seems rather unwise. pmcbts, if your son/daughter said sandals and beachwear, I would think it would be considered rudeness towards the hosts.

Have some class, act like a grownup, and look polished and put-together (which is certainly do-able in casual clothing if the situation calls for it). Showing up looking like a slob is rude and insulting.

I’m curretly on my way to UVA’s admitted students day. I packed two pair of dress shorts, a pair of jeans, two pairs of Sperrys, andmy beloved UVA tshirts. If I feel out of place, I’ll be sure to let everyone know.

I believe the DOTL and admitted student receptions are two different events. DOTL is very informal – shorts and tees are not out of place. The receptions are private affairs and are more business like and students would be more comfortable in casual business attire – khakis and button shirts for boys, nice pants or skirts for girls. Al least, this was true when my son was admitted.

I went to a UC Davis dessert reception for admitted students the other day. I decided to dress up…
