I got an invitation to go to a reception for admitted students. Apperently they're having them for admitted Obies all over the country. I'm going to the Portland, OR one. Does anyone plan to go or have any idea what it's about?

I’m betting they’re going have some professor talk about Oberlin’s philosophy and a few local alums talk about their lives after Oberlin. Maybe a few current students who live in the area. That’s what they did at a Whitman reception I attended in the fall.

I was invited to the Oakland one, since I’m in the SF bay area. Looks like I have to RSVP by today…eh…not sure if I want to go, though.

These are usually a nice way to meet kids from your area who might be attending the same college. Sometimes someone who applied ED can be a nice influence on those who haven’t quite decided yet. It’s nice to start school with a few familiar faces–ones you might see on the airplane/or stuck together in an airport (!) fairly frequently for four years!

I agree–they’re a lot of fun. Not so much a formal program, mainly just for socializing.

Most Oberlin students don’t know any other Oberlin students before they get on campus – these get-togethers are pretty good to make freshmen less nervous during Orientation.

Also, it gives you a taste of campus, if you can’t visit.
