Admitted to Cal Poly, what to do about housing?

I recently got accepted into Cal Poly for Software Engineering and I’m thinking that it might be the school for me. I want to wait until I hear back from all my other schools before accepting completely. My mom was telling me that college housing is usually a first come first served basis, and I should check if I can put down a housing deposit without committing to the school completely. Obviously I would lose the deposit if I didn’t end up going to Cal Poly, but I want to know if that’s an option. Thanks!

It is not an option. You have to commit before you’re allowed on the housing page.
Congratulations!

Cal Poly will make sure that ALL freshmen have housing. I promise you that. Your mom is right that it states that housing is first come first served, however that is for the particular housing you are applying for such as South Mountain, Yosemite, etc. Also first come first served for doubles. Even though on the application you can’t even sign up for a double room. Early decision applicants must have their deposit in by March 1st. So they do not expect regular decision to do the same. I promise you that there will be housing for you. Call Cal Poly Housing for any questions, the school is so helpful with everything. Do not pay a deposit until you are absolutely sure. Anything else I can help with just let me know. I was accepted Early Decision Economics 2015. My sister graduated Cal Poly 2013. Good luck with your decisions.

@SoCalGirl97. What was I thinking? Of course it doesn’t come up unless you accept! oops.

Yes, and think carefully about putting down a deposit you think you are willing to lose because the deposit is about $2100.00!

Housing is assigned on a first come, first served basis by the date that University Housing receives the Housing License Contract and the deposit. If you can afford it, I would recommend accepting the offer of admission (intent to enroll) which has no deposit required so that you can go ahead and submit your Housing Contract and housing deposit. Then if you end up deciding to attend a different school, be sure to cancel your Housing Agreement ASAP in writing and apply for a housing refund. As long as you cancel a minimum of 30 days before move in, you are entitled to a full refund.

@ralph4. Is transfer housing the same situation as freshman housing? I recently got accepted and am currently waiting for UC’s response, so I’m not sure if I should just accept, pay deposit, and ask for refund if I change my mind. And do you know if there are any veteran benefits regarding registration and housing? Thanks in advance.
