Adroit Journal Summer Mentorship Program 2019 Thread

Hi guys!! I’m new to this place – came on here this morning to look for some application tips for the adroit journal’s mentorship program and couldn’t find anything for this year. Is anyone else applying?? I was denied last year but I’m really hoping this year is the year its supposed to work out.

If you have no idea what the adroit mentorship is, it’s basically the best summer thing I can find for writing – it’s for high school students and it’s free/online. The mentors are amazing, I just checked some of the poetry ones out. (I’m applying first choice poetry, second choice fiction. But my fiction is bad lol.)

There’s more here: https://theadroitjournal.org/about/mentorship/

Ugh I really want to get in. Trying to figure out when it’s best to submit. Idk ?

Hey! This will be my first time applying. Why do you think you got denied last year?

@jazhope321 They’re super selective with their decisions I think, so I wasn’t really surprised - just disappointed. Looking back I don’t think I actually used their advice this year from their website so I think I’m going to do that.

They put on their website under the guidelines –

“Each year, students ask for tips. Here’s the biggest one we can give: In your statement, tell us why you want to spend your summer in this program, rather than simply in a summer program writing or reading or editing. Again, why ours? As always, the more specifics, the better.”

Is anyone else applying? I think I’m going to apply this week, I feel like the earlier the better, right?

Hey! I might apply for this program and was wondering how good it is. Also, I read some of the pieces that Adroit publishes, and they all seem very experimental/not at all what my writing style is like. Should I apply anyway?

I am planning on applying! My pieces are not experimental/abstract so lets see how it goes haha

@beautifulchaos I’d say why not! I think their panel of mentors is more diverse this year, at least it seems like it. From what I can see it looks like a lot of really accomplished writers have come through the program - I’ve also heard adroit responds encouragingly even when rejecting so maybe even that would be beneficial, like to get on their radar haha

I’m applying even though I had a bit of a situation with adroit and they said they’d understand if I’d never wanted to work with them again. Notwithstanding my personal experience, the editors and managers of the magazine are very nice and I’ve heard only positive things from those who have used the program.

@wistfulwords Oh cool (now I’m curious hahah). Yeah they seem nice though I don’t actually know any of them lmao

i was denied last year too but i’m applying this year. i think i got denied because my writer’s statement was probably trash and i applied for poetry but that was trash too since i’m a fiction writer haha

@bluediary good luck! i hope we all get in ahh

just submitted my app! fingers crossed ahhhhh

Does anyone know how selective this program is? Like more or less than the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio? I’ve gotten into Kenyon and Iowa, but I wanted to know if this is a lot harder to get accepted into than a traditional summer camp.

I believe it’s way more selective

I think it’s about equal. I almost got in last year (they sent me an email saying they really liked my application, but that it didn’t fit the style of any specific mentors)… :(. Anyhow, I’m applying again this year, and hoping for the best :). Also, if any of you guys are attending Kenyon or Iowa, you can attend this too!

Yeah, this isn’t an ‘or’ situation with Kenyon/Iowa/UVA/etc, it’s an ‘and’. Which, together with the lack of cost, I think makes it more selective

Does anyone know what Iowa or Kenyon’s acceptance rates are? Maybe one of us can email Adriot and ask what their rate is

Sorry **adroit

As a side note, the matriculations list is unbelievable lol https://theadroitjournal.org/mentorship-college

@mrcolumbiahopeful04 I read from an article that Kenyon’s acceptance rate is 20% ish, although what I do know is that it’s higher than Iowa. Iowa always accepts 144 people, and they said they rejected over 600, so that could either be 24% or 20.5%.
