Advanced Make-up Training

This question isn't "college" really, but maybe someone here can point me in the right direction. My son is a MT freshman at Ithaca. This past summer his interest in theatrical makeup blossomed into a passion, and though he has had a class in makeup at a summer camp, he is mostly self-taught through extensive reading, videos, and experimentation. He's hoping to do makeup for some theatre and film projects next semester at Ithaca.

Acting and singing are his top concerns but he's really enjoying learning about makeup. Seems like a good skill to develop, in terms of overall employability. I'd like to find him some options for advanced training or an internship for the summer. Where do I start?

I don't know anything about theatrical makeup, I don't even wear any regular makeup myself!

I have meet and watched Joe Dulude II on several occasions do makeup for Wicked. He has a Facebook page and a website. He was always super friendly and eager to answer any questions. Take a look at his sites. He might be of help.

My younger, non-acting daughter was very interested in theatrical makeup and when I researched something for her summer after senior year of high school the best program I found was at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. I can’t find the specific class right now but I believe it was three hours once a week in the evening. It’s a fantastic class even as a non-theatre major she continues to use these skills fairly often (especially around Halloween!). If I get a chance to find the exact class I’ll PM you.

There was also an offering at Northwestern but it was geographically unacceptable.

Oh, I just noticed that you live in Virginia so perhaps my suggestions won’t work so well. I would then suggest you look at local colleges with theatre departments for their summer classes.

A local college theatre department won’t have anything more advanced than what my son can take at Ithaca. I’ve suggested that he talk to his teachers about maybe finding an internship.

There’s a school with campuses in LA and NY called Makeup Designory – anyone know anything about them? (Don’t say “look at their website,” I have learned that anything looks good on a website.)

Prodesse, earlier today I messaged a friend/former student who did a professional makeup certification course in LA after she graduated from college. It was geared toward film and stage acting, if I remember right. Will let you know as soon as I hear from her!

The SVA program is way more advanced and “connected” than anything he would find at Ithaca. You should look into it, or not.

He’ll be living in NYC eventually, so I’ll keep that SVA program in mind. I hadn’t thought of makeup as a “visual art,” but of course it is!

I know a BFA who went on to do grad school for makeup.

Where did he or she go, do you recall?

I would think he should be able to benefit from an apprenticeship or an internship in a show such as Lion King or Wicked, or at least volunteer to work in production for some of the zillions of Vampire films or TV shows. I know locally in our community there are alot of Haunted House and Halloween productions. I wonder if over the next few weeks he could see if there is anything local to his college or on campus which could use his assistance with theatrical makeup. If there isn’t much on campus, this could be something that he seeks to start up at his college as a club which could eventually bring in some specialists to give workshops on campus.

correction: after graduation, she attended beauty school and THEN went on to do grad school for makeup at North Carolina School of the Arts.
