Theatrical Make-up and Hair

My high school junior daughter is very interested in theatrical make-up and hair and is desperate to take a class or two in that area this summer. I have looked everywhere and can only find one class offered at Northwestern and while this class is available to rising HS Seniors there is really nothing else for her out there and so it won't work.

I am asking, in a roundabout way, if anyone out there knows of a summer offering in theatrical make-up and hair training. It can be a one - six week program, a single course offering if it's commutable to NYC tri-state area, I'm pretty open to suggestions. I have already tried most of the colleges I can think of including FIT, SVA, NYU, Purchase, Adelphi, even Bard. I've tried local kids theatre summer programs also. Most are thrilled to have her help but she would be learning by doing which she already does at school.

She's looking for real training and I keep coming up empty handed. Any suggestions?

You can look into programs that are offered by MUD (Make-up designory) they offer classes in NYC. Unfortunately most of the makeup “schools” (non-bfa programs) are on the west coast, although Toronto seems to be up and coming right now.

Thanks so much TechnicalMom! I looked at the program and think she might be able to take their 101 class and/or their airbrushing class. I’ll call tomorrow.

Unfortunately TechnicalMom they said you have to be a high school graduate to take their classes so that’s out as she’s a Junior in high school.

I think she may have to try an apprenticeship/self taught program this summer.

That is too bad. Their classes looked interesting.

So we found a great program in West London, made all the decisions as to how we would pull it off and when I called to register her today they told me it was canceled this year!!! TechnicalMom - what are the California classes you mentioned?

DePaul University (Chicago) offers certificate programs through their continuing and professional education program. This summer they have two offerings: “Wig and Hair Dressing & Maintenance Certificate Program” and “Wig and Hair Production Certificate Program”.

Joe Blasco has schools in Hollywood and Orlando and they offer seminars throughout the country (major cities).

There is the Cinema Makeup School in LA and the Studio Makeup Academy in Hollywood.

These are the programs that I have heard the most about. I am sure that there are many others too!

Thanks again TechnicalMom - I’ve contacted all your suggestions and so far DePaul, Joe Blasco, and Cinema Makeup School all require a high school diploma or GED. I’m still waiting to hear back from Studio Makeup Academy.

I did find three more possibilities while “googling” your suggestions and one will allow under 18 year olds except it’s a little too basic and doesn’t include special effects or character makeup but, hey, it’s something, oh and it’s in NY which is a plus. One’s in Dublin Ireland which is a no, and the final one is a three day workshop that I’m still waiting to hear from. Who would have thought this would be so hard?!

What about finding a theatrical hair and/or make up artist professional who may be willing to take an intern and mentor your D over the summer at some theater company? If in commuting distance, that might work.

We offered that to our daughter since we have many friends who can put us in contact with mentors but she’s not interested - she’s very shy and also wants some peer contact. For the 4th quarter of her HS senior year she gets to do an internship (instead of senioritis)and that is when she wants to work with someone - if she gets some training first.

We did just find a place in LA that TechnicalMom suggested that allows 16-18 year olds for their 3 week Special Effects summer session. Looks like a good place, not as convenient as NYC but I think we can handle three weeks in LA.
