Not to say that MIT isn't relating how difficult the Chem exam really is, but the textbook problems shown on the bottom of the page below don't seem to match up with how difficult students that have taken the exam say it is. I also noticed that the spring 2005 course doesn't use the "Principles of Modern Chemistry" textbook at all and their psets are from their other books. What am I supposed to believe? Any people that have passed the exam that used the book in the page below?

thanks

true...even in HS the AP Chem test is sooooo hard and unfair...:)
heeey, people from HS who took AP Chem test, how was it?

i took ap chem...didn't think it was bad at all...but I also hate chemistry so I would like to get it out of the way by the time school starts

i took ap chem when i was a sophmore...didn't really try...senioritis and youth laziness.....got a 3...imagine how good i would be if did an hour less of AIM/tv/sleep everynight....thinking of becoming a chem eng major

so you say you still can get in MIT even if you have an ugly 2-3 in AP Chem?

they don't even have to see your score if you don't report it...I didn't report any of my aps...anyways we're getting off-track...who has taken the advanced standing exam?

of the gobs of people who take the advancedc standing exam, v. few (a handful, literally) pass out of the requirement. i had a 5 on ap chem and didn't even bother; you probably have better things to do, but if you're all gungho about advanced standing exams, be aware that it's not likely you'll actually get anything useful out of it. sorry i don't have actual concrete info on what the exam's like.

Don't forget that even if the questions on the exam are easy (I didn't take it, so I don't know, but I would doubt it) -- the chem department grades them and gets to decide who passes and who doesn't. The chem department is also not known for being particularly benevolent regarding requirements.

Also, the spring class might not follow exactly the same syllabus as the fall course does -- most people who take 5.111 in the spring are the ones who failed it in the fall. The spring class is purportedly not a great deal of fun.

I got a 5 in AP Chem but didnt take Advanced standing because its supposed to be really hard and if only a handful of MIT incoming students pass it I cant imagine the difficulty of it. The Chem department seems to takes it personally if you pass out
