Advanced Standing

So I was wondering if anyone was considering trying to do advanced standing whereby one can skip a year (or just a semester) if one has 8 AP units in 3 subject areas ? See, I was thinking of doing it, simply because...well.. I'm going to be winces 20 in a few weeks and just graduating due to some crazy extenuating circumstances that I'd rather just leave at that for now and so I figured more than anyone,I have a vested interest in catching up a year, an opportunity I didnt have in high school, otherwise I would have done it. However, my concern is how this will effect my overall experience, if it'll even be worth it to gain bac k a year lost at the sacrifice of one less blissful (so I predict) year at Princeton as well as the impact on the social experience, ya know, because for advanced standing you either start directly in sophomore year (and those ppl already have their group of friends, have been through all the first year stuff that i would just then be going thru, etc) or it happens after freshman year in which case i would have made friends already only to be sort of torn from them / the residential college / etc. If you were in my shoes, what would you do? Also, I would greaaatly appreciate any feedback from current Pton students who have done advanced standing and can tell of the social impact. Thanks to those who respond, because i'm in dire need of some opinions seeing that I'm actually seriously considering doing this

umm well advanced standing is better at princeton than other schools because by joining eating clubs u meet new people anyways =P but other than that i dunno. if i were in ur shoes i would probably try it out =P

I definitely disagree; I really don't think that there's any "good" reason to do Advanced Standing. Not only are you missing out on the social stuff, but you're also skipping a year of a /Princeton/ education, and that, my friends, is priceless.

actually skipping a year of princeton education would be a lotta saved money =P hahahahaha im kidding i know what u mean :)

However, if "catching up" is something you really want to do, rockettgerl, I'd definitely give it a shot. I don't know your circumstances, but if it's important to you, go for it. I really wish you'd be a part of the class of '09, but we'd all still see you for three years, anyways.

Having said that, at Princeton, there's almost no need to "catch up." I mean, you're going to be among the best and brightest scholars at a place that really is on this side of paradise ;) You'll almost have to jump right into your concentration studies, losing the year of academic/creative exploration that freshman year affords. That could be a plus or a minus, depending on how you look at it. Honestly, I'd take all four years and run with them, because from what other students have told me, it already goes by really fast, and you'll end up missing it once it's gone. So really think about it before choosing to do AS, as your experience at Princeton is likely to be an incredible one.

Okay thanks for the advice guys...I'm still not certain - and likely wont be until i get my ap exam scores - but leaning towards not doing AS because the whole having one less yr not even at princeton, but just as an undergrad. like..i realized i'm seriously not looking forward to grad school. it just doesnt seem as...fun?

Stay young as long as you can. To me, undergrad is young. Grad school? Old...

just tell people ur 18, no one will care or know =P, but of course keep the real ID so u can party it up :D

Yeah, grad school is socially less fun (though academically moreso in some respects, although the freedom of undergrad academics is pretty cool) from what I understand. All the law school students I've talked to (at schools like Georgetown, UT, Baylor, Stanford, etc.) have said undergrad is playtime. Grad school=time to buckle down and get on with your life, haha.

So I wouldn't rush the undergrad experience too much ;)

yeah and what's the point of ending up at grad school one year (or two years in some cases) younger than the others?
and there's no way im missing out on one year at princeton :d!

shrek- hahaha. clever. And yeah okay guys, call me convinced and even more so after the hosting program where I officially fell in love and met a number of seniors who were so jealous of me and my four yrs to have the Princeton experience.
