Advancement Via Individual Determination

Does anyone/has anyone taken AVID? What was your experience like? Did it help you with the college process? Did you like the class? I'm asking because I'm thinking of taking it as a second elective in place of Physical Education. (opting out for track) Any responses will help. Thanks in advance :)

Alright dude her you go. At my scholl AVID is a joke, we never do anything but homework and people cut all the time. The teachers will help you with college if you talk to them one on one but they will all encourage you to go to a JC or a 4 yeat public school with in a 3 hour drive from home. When I signed up for AVID it did not sound like that but at my school you must be kicked out inorder to drop it. Unless you go to my school it probably won't be like that, you should talk to people who are in AVID before you make your final choice, but yeah I prefer track.

AVID is bs.

You can get past the 10 char rule by making spaces! I never knew that. They close the spaces automatically for you too.

AVID is a total joke at my school too. You would be far better served to take an elective or another class that deals with a subject that will be fun and challenging.

If you are at all resourceful, you will be able to manage the college process just fine. Thousands and thousands of students have done it themselves.

I agree. Most people in AVID at my school are there because their parents make them. If you think that it will help you get into college or become a better student, I would suggest that you first change yourself (this is important; no motivation or passion to succeed, and you won't) or join an effective study group with friends who will help you with the things that are troubling you. At least, this is what I think based on what I have heard of the AVID program at my school.

Interesting. I've heard the AVID program at my school is pretty decent. I AM motivated and passionate about getting into a good college, that's why I decided to join AVID. AVID takes trips to colleges (like UCs) and they tremendously help you with your application. So now, its either AVID or Digital Art 1/2 (for the stupid 1 year performing/visual arts req. for UCs)

AVID is only for minorities at my school. My friend who's white actually wanted to get in and they wouldn't let her, haha.

AVID itself does not help you get into college.

It's mainly a program aimed at middle-end students who can greatly benefit from improved study habits and motivation. It's not for top-of-the-line students who can pull off nice grades without coaching, nor is it for the hopelessly bad students who are on the brink of dropping out.

At my old high school, it was offered mainly to students with a GPA ranging from 2.0 to 3.0. For that year, I ranked at the top of my class, and when I asked about it, they recommended me against it as they honestly thought it'd be a waste of my time.

I've had a few friends that did it, and from what I know, they just have to do extra mandatory studying above what is usually required in classes, note checks, etc.

In short, AVID will not really help you at all in college admissions, but it will help you become a better student, if you have the potential to be a top student but aren't one quite yet.

I love my AVID class. It's great.

Contrary to popular belief, AVID does cater to high-end students. There are multiple 4.0+ GPAs in my AVID class.

Also, the UC system gives you more points on their points system for each successive year in AVID. In that way it does help you get into college (if it's applicable to you).

Maybe your school's AVID caters to high end students, but mine certainly doesn't. And I suspect neither do the programs at the schools of other posters on this thread.

I'd rather take a class I enjoyed and was challenged in than a class like AVID where I'd write about my future goals and get notebook checks on my homework :) Because that's really all it teaches, rudimentary study skills.

i dont know what type of school you guys go to but at my school AVID is the BEST…at my school AVID challenges it’s students to take challenging classes, and helps them be successful… in my AVID class everyone is taking AP classes, but we dont just sit there and study… we have learned life lessons like how to cook, sew, and dance, which are things that alot of people dont know how to do.

As for the teachers… they are the best… all of the people involved have become like a second family to me and the rest of the people in my class…AVID opens doors to students as to how to get into college, pay for college, and be successful in college…

AVID at my school is a biased class that caters to minorities who can’t get a grip on life, it’s a joke. I know some cool people in AVID actually who say it’s alright and they seem to be nice and at least somewhat educated, but other than those people, it’s a joke. I mean they go over SAT Prep and school and stuff, but it’s just different from regular school.
