Advertising/Commercial Art: Better to design a major, or to find a school with the major?

i’m a rising senior looking at many colleges, preferably in cities for networking opportunities. i’m interested in a major in advertising/commercial art.
i’d heard it would make me stand out to go through the Create Your Own Major/Individual Studies Program many schools have; it would show go-getter/“pave your own path” and i could work to tailor it and integrate it with marketing, rather than a generic graphics/art major – trying to avoid being a starving artist.
however, i have seen many schools with Commercial Art degrees (or similar programs, like Pratt’s Communication Arts thing), and have been told it provides more community, intra-department assistance, and networking.
obviously i’d want a school with a good art program and marketing curriculum no matter what, but i don’t know if it is worth it to narrow my sights to only schools with Commercial Art degrees.
anyone with experience with either option who is willing to chime in is appreciated.

What exactly is your question? And is your interest the visual side of marketing, or analytical/management side, or both?
