So I am probably going to BU this fall and I am in the arts and sciences school right now. I’m going to attempt to transfer right away, but I’m not sure to which school yet. The School of Communication(COM) has the advertising department, while the School of Management (SMG) has the Marketing department. I’m having trouble deciding which.

I’m more of a creative person who enjoys working with ideas more than numbers so advertising appeals to me in that sense. However, I am really enjoying the personal finance class I am in right now, almost to the extent that I want to be in business.

Advertising has less numbers, but its pay is probably less than marketing.

I’m having trouble deciding, what do you guys think?

i guess i would try to talk to someone in advertising because it sounds like thats what you’re leaning towards. if you didn’t know already, advertising has 2 different sides to it: account and creative. however, i don’t know the differences between the two since i’m in SMG.

also, personal finance is very different from numbers you would be working with in marketing or company finances.

just talk to people and if you find out you like one more than the other, you can always switch into SMG or switch into COM.

Well no offense, but saying the numbers in personal finance are different from the numbers in marketing is kind of absurd. Numbers are numbers. How they are implemented can be different, but for the most part, I think the type of math I do in that class may be similar to math done in the business world, with all due respect.

well i guess i just meant to say that its hard to be involved in numbers when it doesn’t personally involve yourself. i really like to keep track of my own expenditures and savings but when i was suddenly keeping track of another company’s money, finances, and the like, it’s hard to become so interested in something that you cannot see impact yourself immediately.

and i’m not offended in any way. i don’t care if you don’t agree with my statements. it’s just to keep an open mind. it’s good that you’re not easily swayed by forums.

seems like again, you have your mind made up. marketing would be a good mix of both since you have to come up with ways to target certain population segments and figure out what price to charge your customers. if you have any questions, fire away and hopefully we’ll be able to help you more.

Hey, I’m sorry. I read over what I said and I sounded like a jerk You raise a fair point however, but for me, I enjoy doing tax forms for made up people, so I guess I kinda LIKE messing with other peoples numbers lol

no no its fine. i was not offended at all.

but if you like doing tax forms then you might want to consider going into accounting(specifically taxes)? i know tax people get a lot of satisfaction from “cheating” the system and thinking creatively to save money for themselves and others. finding those loop holes is what they live for!

Yeah I’ve thought about it, but I want a job with a somewhat creative outlet. I like being creative,( I act, sing, and play musical instruments). I like expressing myself and I say what’s wrong with doing it in my work? I think marketing is a good mix, but I could be wrong. I’m just trying to find the best thing for me, and it’s kinda hard, which is ironic, haha.
