Advice - Chance of Getting into Some of the Best Prep Schools

I am trying to see if my little boy will have a chance to get into some of the prep schools and would be grateful if you would help to give me some advice. We are Asian Americans. I am very concerned as we do not have much time. His credentials are as follows:

8th Grader at a Not Known Public Middle School

SSAT (November): V 731; M 788; R 713 Total 2,232 (93rd Percentile) or V 96; M 99; R 97 estimated national percentile

All As through grade and middle school except for penmanship - left handed and spent too much on TV and video game

Currently taking College Algebra (for sophomore and junior) at the Public High School and ranked number 1

Involved in almost all activities

Math team and other but did not win any

Mild hearing impariment

Any insight or advice will be deeply appreciated. Thank you in advance.

tigerryam88: He did pretty well on the SSAT, but his academic achivements are not great, though!
Where is he applying?

I think he’s going to fall into the late application pool unless you have completed all app. materials already.

Do you need Financial Aid?

Thank you for the comments. We have not sent in any application yet. I think that the deadline is 1/15/2011. My little boy got almost 100% in all the subjects that he had in grade school and middle school. He is in 8th grade and is skipping two grade to take College Algebra in High School. He could have done better in competition but he is too laid back - watch too much TV and video game. Yes, we do need finanical aid as two of my other kids are getting into college. One got $100,000 over four years, and the other one is in the process of applying. Thank you for the kind input.

I am thinking schools like Andover; Exeter; Milton; Groton; Lawrenceville. Do you think that he will have a chance? We have not filed any applicaiton yet. Thank you for your time and kindness.

those schools are very very competitive!!
any safety schools?

Do you have any suggestions, please?

Any interests in the arts or specific sports? That could also determine which schools might fit him well.

Lawrenceville has a 1/31 deadline, so you have more time to get the application completed.

He loves to read. He does play soccer for 6 years; first chair on the jazz band; Executive Officer of the Student Council. He loves to do volunteer works. Thank you for your kind info.

You should throw in a Junior Boarding school as a backup, especially since you’re preparing applications at the last minute. I’d suggest Eaglebrook (near Deerfield), Cardigan Mountain School (near St. Paul’s), and Fay School (near St. Mark’s). He’ll almost certainly be admitted and can reapply to 10th grade next year with more time to prepare.

If he’s into music, Hotchkiss and Choate should be on your list.

is he good at writing essays? those are pretty important… he needs to write good essays, and if he’s applying now then he needs to do those fast…

He plays musci but we never sent him to learn. He writes articles for the school newspaper and is a decent writer. We did submit the applications, and he wrote all essays by himself. The retired Director of Admissions of one of schools was a roommate of the person who works for me saw my boy’s brief credentials and said that he should be able to get in. The school then sent us the applciation form two days after the deadline. I do not know if we still have a chance.
