Advice for admission to colleges

My son just received his report card, he now a rising sophomore:

GPA 4.5 weighted
4.0 unweighted
Class rank 2/422

His passion is music, but does not want to major in it. He sings for the high school/ and also was the piano accompanianst. He actually taught himself the piano, but i did enroll him for 1 1/2 yrs of formal training. Has done competitions etc, hasnt had any desire to do so. He also sings for a Youth Oratorio outside of school. He also plays the violin, and did play the trumpet.

He is now seriously thinking about his plans for college. He is taking all Honors courses his sophomore year Eng, Alg 2, Chemistry, Civics and Econ, Pre-Cal, Advanced Chorus and then French 2.

Junior year - AP Eng 3, AP Calculus AB and BC (i think he needs to take both at his high school), Honors and AP US History, French 3 (mayb 4), AP Enviorn, AP Bio (mayb) - thinking mayb AP Chem here tho

His senior year would be - AP English 4, APY Physics (i think sits for the B or C Exam - not sure), AP Chemistry (yearlong), AP Stats, AP Computer science (or he could take this in his junior year) and then take French 4

As you can see he doesnt have Chorus in his Junior/Senior year. Do or would colleges look down at him because he is concentrationg on his academics (thats why he wants to drop his chorus). He would still sing for the Youth Oratorio outside of school.

He wants to go into math/science field - possibly nuclear/chemical engineering or mayb physics major

Any advice comments are welcome

way to early to tell his chances but as far as advice goes, your son is doing great keep up the good work and make sure he doesnt have a downward trend in gpa. Good luck to your son!

Im not looking at what his chances are for Ivy colleges etc - im curious if he doesnt take chorus in his junior/senior year if thats harmful to him as far as college admission goes.

My son would rather go to school 24/7. He went to a summer academic camp for a week - and he said mom Im here to learn and not have fun. I did have to say he did meet alot of friends etc and did ultimately have fun and now he is preparing to go to France for a month in which he will live with a family and learn their culture, as well as improve on his french.

Well if your son prefers academics over chorus, then that's fine. But you have to make sure that colleges understand that when applying. Otherwise it may look like he just lost interest and gave up chorus.

There's nothing wrong with his dropping chorus for something he enjoys more. High school is a time of exploration, and colleges won't hold it against him if he gives up one interest for another -- academic or EC -- that is stronger.

It would be a mistake for him to take chorus only to try to impress colleges when h.s. is the time to discover one's passions and interests. As a result of one's passions and interests, one selects colleges to apply to that match those things. Forcing oneself to do something that's not of interest in order to impress colleges is going about the process the wrong way.

Your son also should participate in Youth Oratorio only if he still likes it. If not, he should drop it and use the time to do something he does enjoy.

My son loves to sing - thats why it was a tough decesion for him to make in dropping chorus in school - esp when he loves to sing and be the piano accompanist. He did say that he is going to continue to sing for the Youth Oratorio outside of school. He aslo said that when he goes to college, he wants to joing a choir group as well.
I honestly believe he loves chorus more, but he is looking toward the future and the goals that he set for himself.

I did not discourage him or encourage him for that matter to make the decesion he made. Decesions are a part of growing up - no matter how hard they may be.

Omg i just heard him say "i miss school" ugggggggg what a long summer its going to b lol

Misterme - I dont think it would show that he lost interest if he stopped chorus in school, because he would continue with the Youth Oratorio outside of school

There, you answered your own question. =)
