Average Student

Help. My S has attended an academically intense college prep high school. He ended up in the bottom 5th of the class. He has excellent musical theater, audio recording/production, and leadership skills and experience.

He has not produced high grades and SAT 1050 (reading and math) 21 ACT is disappointing. He has A's and B's his senior year, but probably too late. He's been accepted to a large southern land grant university for telecom and film studies and a well-known art and design school for film and sound design.

He's not getting in good schools with commercial music, song writing and production. He has a very good audio/video portfolio, a full resume of teachical expeince, some good songs he has written, and a good theater CV.

Where do talented kids with average scores and grades go to college?

thanks

It's great that he already has choices to consider. A school that might be an academic match is Point Park University in Pittsburgh - their SAT 25/75 is 890/1120, and their ACT is 19/24. They seem to have a strong arts program (not sure what their music programs are like, though) and also offer a communications major.

Belmont University in Nashville might have what he's looking for in music production. It would be a reach, but I'm sure the portfolio is a very important element.

Have you checked out the Arts/Music Majors forums on CC?

Cyclist - The option may be of no interest to your son, but since he seems to be a bit of a "late bloomer" he may be a good candidate to stay a year at flagship U and then transfer to a smaller school better suited to his interests. I'm sure the "academically intense prep high school" has adequately prepared him to succeed in college classes, so he should do well freshman year. Good luck to you both!

Check out Georgia State in Atlanta. At one time they had a great commercial music program and I know of at least one person with lesser stats than your son who was admitted.

Good luck!

University of North Texas.
