Advice for an incoming accounting major?

Hey everyone. I was recently admitted to UF and will be attending this fall. I'm looking to get ahead before I start at UF so I am wanting to take a course at my local community college this summer. As an accounting major, what would you guys recommend I take? I am leaning toward Stat Methods I or General Biology I. Any recommendations would be great!

P.S. I already have many of my Gen. Ed classes done thanks to AP, but I will only have 3 science credit hours going into UF (and that is only if I pass my APES exam).

P.S.S. If I take Stats, can I make my schedule so that I have Statistics for Business Decisions (QMB 3250) my freshman year? Just so I don't forget the statistics before I take this core course. Thanks for any and all feedback!

Take a beginning accounting course or a Calculus course. Those are the two hardest courses you will have in your first two years at UF. Even though you will have to retake those courses at UF, you will be ahead of the game as far as understanding the material. And accounting at UF requires two semesters of Calculus.

I’m taking Calc AB right now so I can’t do calc because I won’t know my AP score.

pay the extra 7 dollars, to find out your ap scores early so you can alert the university. (Especially since you’re starting in fall)

Yeah that’s what I’m going to do. What since I definitely can’t take calc, what should I take over summer?

Before you go taking classes to “get ahead” you really should consult with an advisor. It never hurts to email. Before I started, I emailed an advisor in my major to get additional questions answered before preview and they were very helpful. I had much of my gen Eds done as well. Good Luck.

I disagree with TampaGator about taking an accounting course at CC. I am a junior accounting major and would strongly recommend not taking any accounting courses outside of UF. The accounting courses at UF are much harder and rigorous than the ones at community college. And make sure you go to Tutoring Zone for Financial and Managerial.

I would suggest taking gen eds, public speaking, and public writing at your CC. Good thing about acc major is the flexibility regarding Gen Eds. I only had to take 6 hours of Humanities because I had 12 Social Science hours.

Just so you know apes doesn’t count toward general education credits…
