Advice for an international East-European Student

Hello.

I have started this new thread as none of the old ones would specifically adress my concerns, especially considering the fact that I am an East-European secondary school student.

So, as I've said, I'm from Romania and I have just finished 10th grade; in 9th grade my GPA was 9.61/10 and in 10th grade it was 9.69/10 (in Romanian scale).

To give a slight idea of my background, I have various academic accomplishments in mathematics - interregional level, sciences (mainly chemistry) - national level, french - national level and some others at county level (philosophy, history, english ). The fact is that I cannot say that I'm hooked on 1 or 2 subjects; when asked about my favourite ones I usually list Chemistry, French and Philosophy. I am afraid that universities may consider that I don't have any passion, but the fact is that I cannot make up my mind and they are all so well inter-connected ...

As of my Ec's, in terms of volunteering, I was really good in volunteering for children with a very disappointing economical background (I helped them with homework, I organised a ball so as to raise money for them, I innitiated a club in which they are to learn how to use computers, I also coordinate volunteers for this club, I am working now on their magazine etc.), but I have done some others : mainly organizer-ones - school contests, theater festivals etc.
Then, I really like debate - I have national awards, I was Ambassador for the European Youth Partliament, etc.
I was also member of a French Club theater club and vice president of the French Association. I have also participated in some informal education events - mainly summer schools (also leadership summer school ).
I am also an intern in the Romanian League of Students abroad.

As part of an international programme - Assist, I will be studying for 11th grade at Hotchkiss School ( there was a selection process in my country, there were selected 3 students, their applications - recommandations+grades+resume+interview were sent to some schools, and I got accepted to Hotchkiss ).

Firstly, I wanted to ask what could I do in order to improve my resume.
I thought of enrolling in French Club, in Debate Club, in Theater Club, in Math Club and Math Team and in a local Foundation for children in difficult situation. I also thought of starting a new club, either one based on sciences or one based on philosophy. Should I focus on less clubs ? (even though I would also show continuity)

Then, what should I do academically speaking ? (apart from getting high SAT scores, I've already started studying) What courses should I take, what should I focus on ? Or am I hopeless ? Also, as an International Student would I be allowed to participate in the national merit award competition (not receiving the award, I don't really care about it, but taking the P-Sat and being ranked among a certain amount of kids) ?

Do I stand any chance for good universities ? Or is my GPA too low and I am too unfocused ?

Also, regarding sports and instruments; I play tennis and piano, but informally, nothing really serious, just for fun. Should I work on them ?

Then, from what I have heard, it is really good to send a resume to 1/2 universities that you really want to get into earlier than necessary (in 10/11 th grade, so as to show yur genuine interest). Is this true ? Would it be advisable for me to do such a thing ? - I also mention that I want to get into good universities (let's say top 10 in USA, because I need a full scolarship).

There’s usually a standard set of classes for one to take each year. Check the curriculum guide, it’s usually in there within the first few pages.

I’ve never heard of this. But something tells me they wouldn’t take it too seriously and would brush it off :/

You wouldn’t need to go to a top 10 to receive full aid. I suggest you broaden your search. Do some research online. I’m assuming that you’ll receive a college counselor in 11th grade, so don’t freak now.

Answer: No and no. That sounds even absurd. Adcoms are unlikely to remember, plus they do change work position. A person who handles your email this year may no longer work there next year. It doesn’t hurt to send, but it’s unnecessary.

For the other questions, you should ask your counselor at Hotchkiss. He/she will give you very detailed and accurate answer.

As you attend Hotchkiss (Assist program) and have such a great profile, I believe you stand great chance. Don’t worry at all and have fun at Hotchkiss.

Haha yeah good luck! You’re fine. Boardingschool(^^) is like the most successful int’l student this year, in terms of admission. As she’s probably from the same region, you guys should keep in touch!

I did not understand the last message, but thanks guys !
I will get in touch with my college advisor and hope that everything will be fine.
