Advice for Econ Majors Transferring this fall

I transferred last year to UCLA as a Math/Econ major and got a 4.0. If any of you Econ Majors have questions about coursework or anything I'd be happy to help you out.

Relevant Courses I took: Intermediate Microeconomics, Upper Div Linear Algebra, Upper Div Intro Stats, Mathematical Statistics, Real Analysis, and Financial Mathematics.

If you're taking the intermediate microeconomics course I recommend studying these lecture notes: Intermediate Micro Notes - UndergradEcon.com --usually you will cover from consumer preferences to Perfect Competition on the quarter system. The rest is covered in the next micro class.

Also: refresh yourself on partial derivatives and take a look at these vids: Mathematics for Economics Videos - UndergradEcon.com.

Hey! I’m interested in applying for Math/Econ, but I’ll be applying next fall. I just have a question about the Discrete Structures course and Linear Algebra (lower div). My school doesn’t offer either one, and for discrete structures did you take an Intro to C++ course?

Hi. Thanks 4 creating this thread. I was wondering, for applying under regular Econ, the only prerequisite r intro micro & macro, calc 1 & 2, (as stats is to b taken after transfer), right? I just wanted to make sure cuz I’ve been told otherwise. Thank you!

Did you finish all pre reqs when you applied to ucla? And did you have a 4.0 at ucla or cc?

@Hsandovaljr
@strive101

Are any of you applying to Math/Econ as well, to any other UCs also?

@eloquent

I’m applying under only Econ for all, but I put Math/Econ as an alternate for UCSD. I’ll be applying to Cal/UCLA/UCSD/UCI
and you?

I’m also considering Math Econ, nice to find so many people with a shared interest :D

The links in the original post seem to be dead links for me

I was thinking going pure econ but chose math econ to be more well rounded plus I plan on going to grad school in the future. As for where Im applying to, Im still compiling my list but for sure ucla ucb and ucsd.

@Maninder Yeah, it helps a lot by finding people similar in my situation. Have you taken any C++ courses? Or Discrete math? My CC has a into to c++, but I don’t think it will transfer. And are you punjabi?

@strive101 I’m pretty sure I’ll be applying Math/Econ at UCLA and UCSD. I think there’s one more UC that offers the joint major, and for the other UCs I’ll probably apply as Econ. (like irvine, davis)

Transferred Fall 2011 with a 3.5 from CC. Math Econ. C++ class is my only missing prerequisite.

Took Econ11, Math115A, Stat100A, and a Humanities class. Fall GPA = 3.6ish

Econ11 with Mazzocco = He gives practice midterms and finals (from 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2010) and the later ones are considerably harder. Just do the practice midterms a couple of times 3-5 days before the midterm and you’ll be fine. Got an A on the final, ended up with A-. Class averages for the midterms and final is around 70/100. Top 25% of class gets A, 25-50% gets B, 50-75% C, errbody else fails. A good TA is needed to succeed. Not saying that Mazzocco is a bad prof, it’s just that there’s a lot of people in the class and he doesn’t have a lot of office hours.

Stat100A with Christou = He’s a good professor, but the exams are a bit hard. The final was hard in my opinion. Would have been easier if he gave us a practice final to play around with. You have to find more problems to solve, cause the only problems you’ll be practicing with are the ones from his HW, practice midterm, and lecture which is not a lot. He hold a lot of office hours. Somewhat moody but overall he’s nice.

Hey all UCLA math/econ people!

I am applying to UCLA math/econ for the coming fall.

I finished all pre-req for the major:

Cal 1A A-
Cal 1B B+
Cal 1C A
Cal 1D B
Diff eq C+
Linear al Will be taken in winter
C++ A
Mi Econ A
Ma Econ A
Dis Math Will be taken in winter

Overall GPA 3.75 after this fall

Do I have a good chance to go UCLA for math/econ? I am worrying as I am not really did well in my math class, all my A’s are generally from the IGETC class.

@kan9160 Hey what kind of C++ course did you take? At my CC we have Introduction to C++ and another course Programming Methodologies which is basically the same thing. Which one did you take?

I think the one I took is intro to C++…
