Hi everyone! The Johnson Scholarship competition thing is this weekend, and I’m handling it pretty well but was wondering if a current or former Johnson Scholar could answer a few questions for all of us out there.
I’ve heard some of the interview questions are “weird”, haha. True? If so, like what?
Any advice for what to wear, both for interviews and the rest of the time? (I know, girly question, but I want to be well-prepared)
Any other extra advice?
View this as a business interview. Dress appropriately. Be prepared toanswer questions about your essays, why you want to attend W&L, what you bring to the school that is unique. Be yourself. Your grades and XC have gotten you this far so now its time for the iterviewers to see who you are as a person.
Aside from your interview clothes bring clothes that you would wear to a party. You will most likely end up at a fraternity house at night. The fraternity houses have had many years or beer spillage, and with the spillage comes the dreaded “floor funk.” Bring a pair of shoes you don’t mind getting pretty nasty. Floor funk does not come out!
W&L is a very social school. The students there study hard but like to go out and have a good time.
It is important to get a feel for the social life while you attend the Johnson interview. I can’t imagine spending 4 years at an institution where I did not enjoy life outside the classroom.
There is so much to the college experience that is not taught in the classroom. The girls my daugther met during her Johnson interview have guided her path through W&L. Take advantage of everything offered over the trip. Being a Johnson is a wonderful opportunity for any student, but as a Johnson I believe you have an obligation to be fully engaged in the life on campus and in Lexington as a whole.
One of favorite all-time quotes, from writer/director Joss Whedon: “Remember to always be yourself. Unless you suck”
But, in all seriousness to the OP, W&L is a very friendly, social place, but you don’t have to be a big partier to fit in. And one way to disqualify yourself is to be a drunken mess at a party during your Scholarship competition. Have fun, relax, and in my Grand Mom’s words, “don’t compare your insides to other people’s outsides”
The weekend was great. I had super cool classes (like 8 people in the first and like 18 people in the second) and all of the professors I met were absolutely amazing. The student body was so interesting because even though the vast majority of them were partiers, they were still some of the nicest friendliest people I’ve met. Friday Underground (in a basement with music and hanging out, no alcohol) was soooo much fun now and everyone was super chill. Everyone I talked to thought the interviews went well, but the best part of the whole weekend was the other Johnson finalists. They are truly phenomenal people and after just a few days we got so close. I’m in the middle of a group chat with a bunch right now. We’ll see what happens, and I’m still concerned about greek life, but W&L is def an incredible school.
