As we all know, the Johnson Scholarship interviews are coming up in two weeks. I was just wondering if current/past Johnson Scholars would like to share their experiences with the selection program. I'm getting a bit anxious waiting for the trip, and if anyone has any tips for the 2011 candidates, I know they would be appreciated by everyone :)

My child was involved in the past. Had a great time getting to know the first choice school better. There is an opportunity to go to class and meet great kids from all over. My advice is to get to know as many fellow Johnsons as possible. My child is now best friends with someone from that week. Just remember you are “interviewing” the entire time. There is a chance to go out one night with your host. Behave as if your mother/father was in the room! People have been put on planes home as result of inappropriate behavior. I seem to remember there are several interviews, at least one with professor and at least one group interview. Check the weather before you come, it’s still cold there. Have a great time!

scmom12- Thanks for the information, it is very reassuring! I am definitely most looking forward to meeting kids from all over the country, and I’m sure it will be a great experience regardless of whether or not I get a scholarship. And I will make sure to check the weather. :)

One of my biggest concerns is what to wear. Do you have any advice on that? I know somewhere it said for interviews, formal business attire is recommended, and casual attire can be worn the rest of the time, but how casual is W&L casual? Or am I just overthinking this? Clothing is just something I have full control over, so I want to make sure I get it right.

Casual for my daughter was jeans and nice top - what you will see people wearing to class. Some days are a little dressier, say for sorority event, like casual skirt, tights and boots (very common look up there) if that makes you feel more comfortable. Interview attire is formal business, but my daughter did not have suit, just nice skirts with top and sweater or cute peacoat and flats. Of course dressier always ok so suit or nice dress also appropriate. You will get the name of your host before you go. You can email or facebook her and ask questions. If you are driving, might want to throw in air mattress.

scmom12, thanks so much! That really eases my nerves. The boys have it so much easier…they can just wear dress pants and a tie, and they’re all set. The scholarship coordinator just sent out an e-mail about packing advice, so that’s taken some stress away, too. Anyway, thanks again for the advice!

This might be a dumb question, but what is typical “casual” clothing for guys on campus? Khakis and a polo? Jeans and a t-shirt? Something in between?

I’m not as sure about guys. Best idea is to go to website and look at pictures such as in Scene on campus. There’s also a slide show from parents weekend. You can probably see range of clothes there. I think the answer Jamezz93 is all of the above depending on the day. Never bad to err on side of nicer. Again, you should get the name of your host soon and can email or facebook with questions. Also, I think the guys are still in their pledge weeks, so might be more dressed up than usual (or unusally dressed up).

I asked a student I am quite fond of…here was the reply:

Khakis, boat shoes or Nikes, button down, sweater or polo

Hope that helps.

I am loving all the Johnson finalists on campus!!! Good luck to you all!!! I am hosting one, who is just awesome!!! GO GENERALS!! You will love it here!

My Son just got his!!! Don’t have a heart attack when you open the box…it looks like a regular sized letter, not a big package.

Good luck everyone!!

Just got my letter today, too- Johnson Scholar!! :)

My D also received the Johnson scholarship. I though the email they sent out on Friday was cruel. Yeah- we know who is getting it but you don’t!!! For students to have to wait till Monday or later is rediculous. For some of these students, this is their dream school and the wait must have been awful.

The 2 other schools that offered my D a free ride - called her the following week.
Not impressed with W and L’ s way of handling this.

I completely disagree with Gibson. A lot of people are on CC trying to find out timings because of a lack of communication by the schools. W & L is great at communicating with the students and parents. Would you rather sit for days wondering when the letters would hit the mail? Or waiting for the phone to ring? For goodness sakes.

I agree with frustratedad. W&L handled this just fine. It was very nice of them to notify us that they had sent out letters so we knew they would arrive by Monday at the very latest. Of course they know who is getting it…they decided!! I didn’t think the e-mail was provocative at all. It was very courteous. And getting a decision on a Monday when we left Lexington a week and a half before is pretty quick, too. I thought they communicated well and in an appropriate manner.

Gibson1514 I honestly can not imagine what type of parent has a student receive this scholorship and then complains. Do you realize the magnitude of the gift offered? How can you possibly find fault with the University? If you have a sour feeling about their offer and your child agrees, I would suggest she choose one of the other offers she has received. You will not be pleased down the road.

got the johnson scholarship in the mail today!!! excited!! =)

Congratulations comeonapril1 - You have a couple of great opportunities. Any idea which you will choose?

Daughter received letter that she was a Johnson Scholar today. She is from a huge public high school with 35 NMFs and a big city. W&L is much smaller than her high school and is in a very remote location. W&L aggresively pursued her to apply for the Johnson. When she left the school, she definitely wanted a bigger school closer to a big city. The scholarship offer is so huge that she is reconsidering. She has other full ride scholarship offers. She applied to Vanderbilt because her friends did. They accepted her EA after reading her essays and offered her a free weekend at Vanderbilt (including) transportation. We still haven’t recieved their award letter. I don’t know what her choice will be.

I have a d. who is a junior at Vanderbilt. When she was looking at schools, W&L was also high on her list. I think they are socially comparable, with Vanderbilt offering a bigger school in a city atmosphere. It might be a better fit for your daughter if the financial offer is what you are looking for.

Can the recipients of the Johnson Scholarship post their stats for future years, please?
