What kind of things can/should you do if/when you become a student leader of a school club? Because I'm becoming Student Leader of this drumming group (We call it "World Percussion Ensemble") at school in September, and I just wanted some advice on things to do to make the club fun for everybody rather than just me when it comes time to write college applications.

I had a few informal awards ceremonies for my debate club. Like after our moot court competition, we gave out awards for Excellence in Teamwork, Legal Mastery, Oratory, etc.

As for your responsibility, I would say try to build on the club as much as possible. We're trying to attend a couple of debate tournaments this year, become a member of the NFL, get a real debate coach, among other things. Make an impact. Improve upon what you have.

If the club meets at lunch time try to provide food for members to purchase. We get subway every week and the club even makes a little bit of money from it.

I think a lot of it depends on the club. If you've got vocal, charismatic leaders or members or members with lots of friends (to attend the meetings) then the club should be successful. Make meetings full of energy. Listen to music, discuss music loudly, play music even louder, do whatever you can to pull people in.

Food plays a major part. Have food for AT LEAST the first few meetings, so people get used to thinking there will be food.

Is there a way you could do some creative promotion/fun stuff for the club, like maybe getting out of class one day and set up your drums in the middle of the school and play them really loud? A chorus group at my school had a what seemed to be spontaneous running-through-the-halls-singing day going on, and they seemed to like it a lot. Of course, that depends on your school, your club, your club's members, and what not. Some people might not like it as much as others. Let's hope all of us club leaders have good years this year...I know I'm nervous about my clubs.
