Ok, so ive been havin a problem with the SAT for the past 6-7 months now. I would consider myself a pretty smart person, who came to this country 2 years ago and have a 4.0 gpa. Im a senior and i took my SATs in march, may, nov and have "constantly" gotten the worst possible SAT scores one could imagine. Being competitive is in my nature, but I just cant figure out what the f is the problem in my test-taking strategies or watever, that results in dismal scores! Im absolutely dumbfounded and cant think of a suitable reason for getting suchhhhhhhhh bad scores in consecutive tests, with preparation etc.

I dont care whatever colleges say, but I HAVE to take the Jan SAT and get a super score and boost it from a deplorable score of 1160. I need some advice in crash-coursing this and anybody or somebody who could give me some "sensible" techniques and strategies, which would hopefully not make me get an excellent score. I need to think realistically and not aim for a 1500, but rather 1300+ would be really good to back my college apps!

Pleaseeeeeeee guys.......anyone out there. This site is full of extraordinary ppl who have mastered the SAT and I would request that you guys help me out in such a crisis. I feel as if my dreams will be shattered because of ONE stupid test!

Thanks a lot guys!!!!! ANY help, tips, sensible approaches of getting a 1300+ from an 1160 would be realllllyyyyyy helpful!!!! Thank You!

Well I recieved a 1400 on my exam from a 1000 SAT score. Here is what I did. For verbal I studied words- get the Kaplan book and memorize those words. Your score will already jump. Then you might want to brush up on some Math, i say get those real tests. I believe Xiggi has those exams and will provide you with them for a reasonable fee. If you are doing bad, the best thing you can do is prepare. Everyday you spend preparing you gain many points. I also had barrons and memorized that just so i would have all the analogies down. For reading comp I generally tend not to read the passage, but just skim. I wish you Good Luck! Don't let these tests stop you from achieving your potential

I have a friend who came to US just about 3 or 4 years ago, she gotta 1390 on her sat and got into Cornell U...but she studied like mad crazy for 2 months, gotta 800 on math and 590 on verbal.

avanex20- thanks a lot dude....i believe in what you say! and i will not lose faith in myself. i know i have that potential and ill use it! thanks dude!

and yes...mathgeek...i will calm down....its just today...but thanks!! i sound like a person totally depressed and on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but thats not true. Im really dont let such small things affect my life, but they do obviously hinder one's path in achieving your goals.

But avanex, i think ur an excellent example i can follow!!! Thanks dude!!
Appreciate it all ur guys' help!!!

I got 1430 and it wasn't always that high. I think a main problem for me, and I think that you have this as well if you are really smart as you say, is that I got very nervous when I took it and got lower than I should have the first time. So basically I think on the math you can just do tons of practice tests to gain extra time to combat those nerves if they appear. On the verbal not much, just study tons of those SAT words and you're bound to get better. Just relax, it's only a test.

lol..true daniyal....i know its just a test...but sadly this measly test decides my fate and future! i gotta bounce back man. thats y im sOOOOOOOOOOO freakin desperate to get a nice score this time! buttt yeah thanks for ur tip!

I have a friend who moved here 2 years ago from Egypt, and she is not going to do well on her SATs. In any case, her guidance counselor suggested that she not worry about it and just go to a community college for 2 years and then transfer to a big college and show off her perfect GPA, and the college will never see her SAT scores.

If you can get your scores up, definitely try, but if worse comes to worse, this is a pretty good option - your diploma will be from the college of your choice and no one will be the wiser.

I got 1540 from a 1210 in 8th grade, 1370 PSAT (soph.), 1470 PSAT (junior), and finally a 1540... i just memorized the kaplan/barron's vocab flash cards and took a practice test the night before

i also read 5 books the month before the SAT, which MAY? explain my 70 point increase in verbal...?

Yeah i know- there are many other ways about getting to ur dream school. But im definitely not going to a community college because im definite that ill get into manyyy other excellent colleges because of my gpa, reccs, essay and extracurrculars~! but still the SATs are only one thing which lack, so i just wanna improve on that!
