ADVICE needed for a pre med student!!!

Hi, I am a freshman at UCF and majoring in Molecular Biology and Microbiology. I'm in a program there, the UCF-USF combined med program (<a href="http://www.honors.ucf.edu/Admissions_UCF-USF_Require.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.honors.ucf.edu/Admissions_UCF-USF_Require.asp</a>). Basically, I have to maintain above a 3.5 for freshman year, 3.6 for soph and 3.7 for junior and get a 30 on the MCAT. In the 4th year i would go to med school or i can decelerate and still be at UCF in my senior year so that i can space out my classes more and take the MCAT in the junior summer. However, I'm interested in psychology and would like to explore other fields before I am doing medicine for the rest of my life. My program actually requires you to major in a bio-type major if youre going to be in the accelerated program/be at UCF for 3 years(since theres not enough time to take other classes for a diff major). Since, im going to decelerate, however, I am allowed to choose any major since there will be more time to take classes. Hence, If i did major in psych(and started taking psych classes next year as a soph) I would only have to take what would amount to 3 other science classes(other than physics/organic which are to follow, and i have already taken bio 1 and chem 1/gotten A's in both, and taking chem 2/human anatomy this semester) to follow the program's guidelines, which are: physiology, genetics and biochem. The benefit of this would be not having to take about 5 other upper division electives plus 3 or 4 core classes like microbio which could hurt my GPA also. I also have already taken AP Psych and gotten a 5 on it so i could probably start a little ahead. What do you guys think?

bump. would like to hear any opinions. thanks.

anyoneeeeeee?

If that’s what is going to make you happy go for it, or see if you can take an elective in psych to feel out just how much you like it. I see no significant advantage or disadvantage save for you gain another year of undergrad (for better or worse depending on the POV).

D. is in combined program at different school. One of her minors is Neuroscience (no Psych. minor at her school). She loves it and classes are easier than in her major. She has 2 minors and very busy with a lot of EC’s. She also could have any major. Her program is not accelerated, she is not allowed to graduate UG in less than 4 years. She needs mcat=27, gpa=3.45. Very doable. So far, she was able to maintain GPA=4.0
Good luck, you will be fine! Being in a program gives great peace of mind.

hello, im a high school sophmore and i know for sure i want to go to medical school in the future. im ranked 5th in my class and have a 3.95 gpa. how do you get into the combined BS/MD programs? or whatever you are doing. i heard its very competative and im wondering if i could get in. I just hate the thought of doing well in college and MCAT and then not getting in…what can i do? please help me…

The threads at the top of the pre-med forum page should help you out with a lot of questions you may have. As for combined programs, you need things scuk as community service, some sort of clinical exposure, etc. There’s quite a few threads with the same topic that should help.
