My d is a an Elementary Ed major. She has worked as a counselor at a local day camp and is deciding what to do next summer. Does anyone have any advice as to special programs or type of jobs that will help her when she is applying for a teaching job? She has talked about being a nanny. We think having professional references would be better. Any ideas???

My D is an elementary ed major.

After her first year, she went to a local CC to take some courses and volunteered at a swimming/soccer program for autistic pre-schoolers.

Last summer, she worked at her college as a counselor/mentor to first generation, lower income college bound HS students.

Next summer, she will either return to that program or (my hope) study abroad.

I have no doubts that my D will get a job when she graduates from her 5 year program.

As for your D, what she should do over the summer should be something she enjoys. If she wants to be a nanny, she should. If she wants to return to the day camp again, she should. If she wants something more professional, maybe she should try for a job at a school run summer program where she could make teacher contacts. Maybe she could try to do something with her concentration. For example, my D’s concentration is music so she set up talent shows and organized performances and activities for the students she worked with.

Good luck.

In my area almost all the daycares hire summer help, and most of the people they hire are college students. Maybe she could look into that?
