Advice on choosing two Foreign Languages for the SAT Subject Tests.

Dear all,

I have just joined the CC Community! I was wondering, is it considered acceptable to take SAT Subject Tests in two languages (French and Spanish) to meet the requirement of two Subject Tests? I should also mention that I am not a native speaker, and as I am taking A levels, these are the only tests which will correspond with my curriculum. Is is also true that these are some of the hardest tests?

Any thoughts would really be appreciated.

Thanks :)

Hi! I did the exact same thing, as a matter of fact. I don’t know what A levels are, but they sound advanced and that’s a good thing. I took french and spanish SAT2s on the same day and I got an 800 on french and a 760 on spanish. That was weird, since I speak spanish better than french, but I think it’s due to the separate curves.

Yes, it’s acceptable, although I don’t think it’s a good idea. I would also take a math/science/history test to show that I have some breadth, and if you totally kick butt on the two language tests and want to submit them both, then submit three scores. Is this requirement set forth by a college? If so, which? I and everyone else might be able to help you better if we knew the college you had in mind. Maybe not, I don’t know.

I don’t know how hard the tests are. I am an AP student, which is the most advanced level where I live, and I thought they were easy. They’re just grammar and reading comprehension, unlike the AP tests, where I had to write essays and record myself talking. That was AWFUL. If you bone up on your grammar really well and read (not seriously, I just read novels like La Gloire de Mon P

You’ll definitely want to diversity. Take a science and math test.

Thanks very much for your advice. Yes, A levels are quite advanced courses…we only study 4 subjects but in a lot of depth and each subject has approx. 6 hours of homework per week (including wider reading around the subject). The language courses are quite intense, and we focus equally on the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing…as well as A LOT of grammar. As a result of this, I think that I should be well prepared for the subject tests. However, I’ll also probably take the Subject Test in English Literature as well, and then send my score if I am happy with it. I’m aiming for Ivy League universities, in particular HYP, and intend to major in either French or Spanish. I am aware that everybody suggests that I take a Math/Science Subject Test, but the problem is that unlike the US curriculum, where you maintain breadth, here in the UK we specialise in the last two years of High School. As a result of this, my understanding of Math and Science is not in-depth enough to take a subject test…but AMerican unis are aware of this as I have spoken to AdComs at HYP and they said take whatever tests match your interest and preparation etc. All UK students face this sort of problem, unless they have chosen quite a range of A level subjects. However, most of us tend to specialise in our prefered area, be it Humanities or Sciences.
