Holy crap, does anyone else think this is excessive? I can’t tell if this is normal or not as everyone in this thread seems to have a crapload of clothes. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a guy and I like to dress nicely, but I feel like 30, 40, 50+ clothes is way too much. Maybe I’m just a minority though…

i agree with you…I dress nicely and like to have clean clothes all the time, but this is only acceptable if he is a track runner or some sort of athlete…if not, it’s way too much!

plus you won’t imagine how many stuff you’ll buy during college

@pixels: I felt the same. I’m a college freshman, and I’m just bringing…

10-15 solid color v-neck/regular neck tees
5 button downs
2 full suits (I’m studying business, though), w/a good variety of ties
2 pairs of jeans
2 pairs of khaki shorts
3 pairs of athletic shorts
2 cardigans (it’ll get cold sometime!)
two pairs of each of the following: athletic shoes, dress shoes
one pair of: man sandals, sperry’s, european slip ons, and shower flip-flops.
10 old shirts (workout clothing?)
PJs
a good amount of underwear, socks, etc. (no real count)

After reading my post, I already feel like this is a lot…

I know it looks like a lot on paper, but really when I put it in my closet, it takes up about half a regular sliding closet (not a walk in). I’ve narrowed down shoes to 11 (includes cleats, slippers, running shoes, and 3 flip flips). And I’ve taken out a few sweaters, sweatshirts, and flannels. And now I’m bringing around 30 shirts (including a weeks worth of workout shirts).

And I work out 4-6 times a week, it basically is the same as being an athlete haha. So part of all of that is just athletic clothes too. Plus, since I’m going to live in a beach town, there basically are no seasons. It’s always kinda chilly in the morning and evening, but around 70-80 midday, yearround. So I need the warmer clothes and the regular clothes.

Honestly I think you guys are overestimating how much clothing this is. It’s basically all I own minus a few things, and I’ve never had trouble with it before, so I don’t understand why it’s any different. It seems less convenient to have 2 pairs of shorts and 2 pairs of jeans. Not only does it ruin your clothes faster by washing all the time, but it also has to be a pain to wash casual clothes every couple days.

Plus, girls like well dressed guys right? haha

Unless you re-wear pants, that’s laundry at least once a week. With laundry being $1.25 a load here (don’t know about at your school), that’s a lot of money for less-than-full loads. Plus you said it gets cold, what happens then and you only have 2 pairs of jeans?

I also like having something resembling options. I’m not big on fashion, but I don’t want to wear the same thing all the time. Plus, I need the additional pairs of jeans because in the mountains winter can come whenever it wants.

@aqsewfqq

Oh yeah thanks dude! For some reason, I actually hadn’t packed workout shoes.

As far as the shirts… some of them serve a purpose. I don’t know if you have any experience with this but some of the girls I’ve been “with” have taken shirts with them after a night over. And it’s just really awkward to ask for them back so I let them have them. Meh, it’s just a shirt anyway.

I don’t know man…if you’re living in a dorm and bringing that much sh1t, I wouldn’t want to room with you, and that’s just your clothes.

40 t-shirts? 11 pairs of shoes?

Do you really need to have 40 t-shirts to cycle through? I don’t know about you, but nobody really cares how you dress in college. Nobody is going to take note of the fashionable metrosexual kid and notice that he’s wearing a nice green polo t-shirt today instead of his green striped polo t-shirt.

To be honest, if you’re not metro, I doubt that you’re going to wear all of what you’re bringing anyway. You’ll probably find a nice rotation of 7-10 t-shirts, couple pairs of jeans, 2 jackets and call it a semester. That is if you’re really not metro…

That much clothes sounds like that amount of clothes a typical sorority girl would bring, no offense.

Aptester: you’ve never really been in a girl’s closet have you? Go into any girly girl’s closet, and I’ll bet you anything they have 3-4 times as much as I’m bringing. I know most of my girlfriends have over 100 shirts. Don’t even get me started on my sisters haha

I already have said why I’m bringing more than the average. It’s cold at morning and night, and warm during the day. I also work out all the time and need gym clothes. Plus my folks are moving soon and don’t want my stuff at home. If you saw me, you’d think I’m an average, nicely dressed guy. Chill with the metro comments por favor.

I’m surprised you guys are so shocked. It’s not like I want to bring two couches to the dorms. All my stuff will fit easily and I’m sure ill get rid of some old stuff.

@ApTester

Haha I don’t know what sorority girls you’ve dealt with. I’ve seen the closets of some from Alabama and it’s like… unreal. They probably have more than 40 pieces from Lily Pulitzer alone.

yes…girls definitely have a lot of clothes, they can fill up the entire closet + they will put a bunch under their beds in boxes and cutesy chests. They basically waist 80% of their room storage on clothing, 10% on makeup and 10% school supplies. I’ve actually never seen cleaning supplies or junk food in most girls rooms. But then again you find girls who are the exact opposite :)

If you feel fine with the amount of clothing your taking, then good for you. I’m taking around 30% less…and I also like to be dressy, but believe me…in college rarely people give a sh** what your wearing

14 pairs of shoes , 3 heavier coats, 40 t-shirts 22 sweat shirts/sweaters

come on man. it is a little too much. also, try to do laundry at least evey 2 weeks. i usually do it once a week. many go by based on how much underwear they have , but whatever. yea id pack a little less, but if it can all fit and you really want it more power to ya

For those commenting on the frequency of washing jeans, I wash mine once every 1-2 weeks. Now you may think: is this one of those kids who never showers? NO. I shower daily and change shirts, underwear, socks, etc. daily…just not my jeans. Honestly, it doesn’t make sense to. I would consider reading some of the below articles on jeans…remember that the more you wash them, the shorter amount of time they will last.

I am also really conscientious about the environment I’m in…I never sit in mud, I never stain my jeans, etc. (and I wear dark denim, not light).

im like you ^. i def wear my jeans a several times before washing (I have more than one)

@TheVet: Same! I’ve got two really nice pairs of dark denim, and I also sub in khaki shorts so that way I don’t have to abuse my nice dark denim. :p
