Advice on majoring in Computer Science at UCSB

Hey people,

It’s my final week at my community college and have been accepted to attend UCSB this fall for Psychology. I have been contemplating on changing majors to Computer Science, but the only thing really holding me back is all the courses I’m gonna be required to take, which entails all the math, physics, and other hard related classes.

All my friends and counselors have been telling me to not change my major, as It’ll be a waste of time, since I’m already set to go with Psychology. I do agree in which the time needed to fulfill all those pre-req’s is going to take me another 2 good years to complete since I’d have to start from the bottom with my math and physics classes, since I haven’t taken any real freshman courses. So the time really is an issue, and I would hate to be in the middle of my classes and then realize this isn’t something I want to do. I would hate my life if that was to happen, but I also don’t want to look back 10 years from now, and ask myself how different life would be If would’ve sucked it up and gone through with computer science. Needless to say, I’m trying to go into the military afterwards and do something along the lines with Cyber Security, so in that aspect, I’d actually need to major in Computer Science.

But with the short deadline approaching of needing to submit my SIR to UCSB is becoming an issue since I’m not sure of what I’m really going to do. Not to mention the ridiculous $250 fee required for the SIR, that I do have, but is going to put a hole in my wallet, since Psychology isn’t what I am really enamored with anymore. I need advice from those who are in the same boat, even advice from those who can give me their 2 cents on my scenario. I’m even willing to attend SBCC for the sake of getting my coursework done their, and doing a transition to the university, but I doubt it would be that smooth. That’s enough for now, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
