I am an incoming freshman for the fall 2010 quarter and am signed up as a bio major.

How difficult are the classes for bio majors? Are the professors helpful? I am really concerned for math and chemistry considering they were never my strongest subjects...they were my weakest subjects. I just decided on bio in case I ended up choosing to pursue a career in the medical field.

Should I switch over to psych? I'd enjoy it and I'm better at it. How's the courseload for psych majors?

How's social ecology?
What's the difference between "Psychology" and "Psychology and Social Behavior"? Just different schools?

Too many questions lol.

Before you come in, especially as a BIO major, I strongly suggest you make a decision as to what major you will come in as. Why? Because with BIO, you’ll be starting off with core classes that are considered “GPA-downers”. With Psych or SE, you will be taking easier classes right off the bat.

Personally, I think you should drop BIO immediately, I can already see that your choice to end up in BIO is not strong; for it requires a heavy passion. Courseload for psych majors from what I hear from friends- is definitely much easier than BIO courseload for freshmen at least.

Thanks!
Yeah I don’t think Bio is for me.

Also, I assume the Psych in the School of Social Sciences is more general and the Psych and Behavior in the School of Social Ecology is more research?

AHH! Do not make the same mistake I did!!! >_<

I was admitted as a Psychology&Social Behavior major because I LOOOOVED psych, but I, too, changed my major to Bio because I thought I wanted to do something in the medical field. I knew I wasn’t good at science nor math, so my GPA was really really low during my fall quarter. I am now switching out of Bio and back into PSB -___-;;;

Really evaluate what you like and what you want to do!! Since I am starting over as a PSB major, I don’t know how the courses are, but it doesn’t seem that difficult (especially if you LIKE the subject, you will want to learn it… which motivates you to work harder :D). That’s how I see it, at least…

I think you’ll be fine since you’re an incoming freshman, start off strong! :)

yeah I definitely don’t think I can handle bio…
thanks! :D

The part of bio that coincides with chem is extremely easy. year 1 i breezed through with a 3.9. its kinda fun up to end of year 2 at least in the classes that require critical thinking, like organic chemistry. after that bio is just brainless memorization. for example the bio 98 teacher has asked how many water molecules are produced by glycolysis. a useless detail that doesn’t show whether you know biochemistry but whether you memorized or not.

i’d strongly chemistry with biochemistry emphasis or biomedical engineering if you like the concept of biology, like actual problem solving and hate just crunching vocabulary. take it from a 3rd year bio student 4 classes away from graduation.

thanks for the advice, but I’m really not comfortable with chemistry or math =/
I already switched to psych!
