I'm a freshman in the Honors Program at UGA and I am having some trouble deciding on my major. Currently, I'm really stuck between two paths, and I was hoping that I could get some help and insight from anyone who has experience in either of the paths, knows anything that might help me decide, or simply has thoughts or opinions they wouldn't mind offering.

My two main interests are in Economics and Biology/Chemistry.

Before entering college, I always wanted to be a scientific researcher, and was always really interested in the human body and the biological and chemical processes undergone within living creatures. After researching degree paths I figured I could either be a Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major or a Chemistry major with a focus on Biological Chemistry.

However, I also really had a passion for Economics and did really well in my principles classes. So, my other thought was to double major in Economics and Statistics.

Therein lies my problem. I have to very different interests and don't know which to follow. If anyone has any experience in these fields and maybe could offer insight into what they like/dislike and why they chose to pursue them, that would be wonderful. Otherwise, any advice or opinions would also be greatly appreciated!

I know I still have time to take some classes and really pin down what I want to do, but I want to get involved with some graduate classes and perhaps undergraduate research, so I'm hoping to get a more concrete idea so I can really delve into the subject. Thanks again!

Everyone tends to have 2 of their favorite subjects come into the age old question: should I do this/should I do that? This will tend to always stay on your mind, but, I will suggest a few things from which I have learned from personal mistakes.

Undecided is probably one of the most intellegent majors ever. You get your general studies finished early on, taking a few classes here and there based from interrest. If you find you don’t like said class or professor, than you will at least get credit for an elective which is required for almost all majors.

Find out who the chair is of that subject because they will be able to give you more in-depth details about wanting to switch to that specific major. If you choose to go that direction, you will already know the professor and have a good step into that degree path.

There is a huge difference between a hobby and something you may have to think about and do for the rest of your life. If you can, put yourself in a mindset of if you could live without it…is there one of the 2 you have selected that you think you could eventually lose your passion for?

One of the best things a professor has ever done for me was to not allow me into the program until I had more classes of that specific judgement under my belt. This professor forced me to take 3 different classes in the subjuct before I was allowed to change. Patience goes a long way but you will know you like a subject on a college level.

Good luck in deciding

Thank you! I do think I’m going to wait at least one and maybe even two to three more semesters before declaring a major now.

That said, I would still love to gather any other advice anyone has to offer, opinions anyone has, or even personal experience either with these major, careers, or anything related!
