Hi,

I'm an incoming second year, and I am an intended Public Health major. I maintained a 3.97 GPA my first year, but for my major, I need to take two units of math (the 16 series), but I am really horrible at math. Any advice for how to get around this...I actually managed to escape taking Calculus in high school, and I know that puts me at a serious disadvantage. I have only this year to take 16A and B. Should I try a CC? Give up on my major? Help!

The 16 series is the easiest option left for you. You can try a cc but it might be a little too late at this point. You only have this summer to try to take 16A at a cc. You will eventually have to take 16B at berkeley in the fall or spring if you go forward with taking 16A this summer at cc. However, the 16A class at cc may not adequately prepare you for 16B at berkeley. Therefore, just try your best at taking 16A in the fall and 16B in the spring at berkeley. There are resources at the SLC for the 16 series so take advantage of them. I am also an intended PH major and recently finished the 16 series during my first year.

If you got a 3.97 gpa…math 16A should be a breeze. I got an A+ in math 16B during my first semester easily and I doubt I’d be able to get a 3.97 gpa regardless of what classes I took
