Advice please...switching to Summer Start as 1st choice

My son was deferred to 1/31 on Tuesday in the same big wave of notifications that many here also received. He was bummed but understands and felt better after finding out a higher stat student from his school was also deferred at the same time. My son applied DUS Fall 2019 with summer option marked and Altoona as 3rd choice. 4.1 WGPA 1240 SAT. He would not accept Altoona offer to do 2 plus 2. I know Altoona has been great for many but he has other offers of direct admit to business major with merit, plus he would really prefer spending all 4 years on the same campus. UP is still his number one choice though, and he would accept summer start with no hesitation.

Do you think changing to Summer Start as 1st choice would be of any advantage/help? He knows of over 20 kids from his school who have already received their acceptances to PSU UP Fall 2019. Most higher stat kids, but a few with the same stats. Same stat kids applied health majors and liberal arts. We are just wondering if asking to start in the summer lets admissions know he’s committed to accepting and attending PSU. Many of those high stat kids from his school applied to PSU as back up only since they applied early decision at other schools. Unfortunately they haven’t let PSU know they won’t be attending so there is concern spots are being held for kids from his school who have no itention of accepting.

Thoughts on switching to summer start? Would it make a difference to admissions?

@momof2inpa That would be redundant because In effect he has already applied for summer.
When you apply fall with summer checked, they will evaluate you for fall first, then if you are denied, they evaluate you for summer. Only if you are denied both fall and summer will they go to third choice of 2+2.
Hang tight. The deferral was because if so many applicants and not because of low stats. He seems to be a match and Inexpect he will get into UP.

Thanks @jlhpsu
