My kid will be receiving an MS from the J school this May. It seems that they actually receive their diplomas at a separate ceremony that afternoon, but can participate in university commencement also if they wish. Honestly, just reading about it it sounds like a horrendous mob scene. His graduation from a school with 4K undergrads and far fewer grad students was lengthy enough. At least there seniors traditionally got underclassmen to save seats for their families. What do you think? Is it worth going to commencement?

I attended the Columbia University graduation in 2009 when my D got her BA from Barnard. We made a wonderful week of it, attending the Baccalaureate on Sunday, Barnard’s Class Day on Monday (I think) and then the University-wide ceremony on Wednesday. I will say that the big she-bang is indeed VERY long, but, IMO, well worth the hassle. I would not trade that memory for anything. We also got quite the NYC weather smorgasbord that week: we were freezing during the Barnard ceremony and were very hot and got sunburned two days later for the university-wide one. So bring ALL the clothes! :)

I would definitely go if it were his BA. The j-school has “j-school day” on Tuesday, and a ceremony and reception on Wednesday. I’m thinking that might be enough. Unless, of course, S wants to do the whole thing. We also will not receive enough tickets for the 4 of us (parents, gparent, godfather). I wonder if those who have extra tickets can give them to friends. Anyone know? (I know they can’t SELL them. )

Yes, you can get extra tickets from friends. Just have your son put the word out that you need some…

Just found out that A) S doesn’t want to attend university commencement, and B) journalism day is not open to guests. Makes things simple!
