My step-daughter will be graduating with a master's degree in speech pathology next May. The date conflicts with a regular but important work obligation for me (we're not in NY). Before I talk to my boss, I thought I'd get a feel for NYU's graduation ceremony. Do they have one big graduation or does each college have their own? Do they do undergrads and grads together? Are tickets limited? (As much as I love Step-D, she has lots of close family and it's possible I might not make the cut, or more likely, I could give up my seat to another relative who would love to be there and I could go to work without upsetting everyone!)

Any input about the graduation would be very helpful! Thanks!!

So there are three tiers of graduation ceremonies at NYU. The largest ceremony is the “official” commencement that takes place in Yankee Stadium, and includes all schools and students, grad and undergrad. This is generally the hardest one to get tickets for, as tickets are limited to 3 per graduate.

The second tier is the school specific graduation ceremony. This is just for her specific school, and this is the ceremony that she will walk in. Generally, more tickets are available for these, and in my opinion, it’s the more valuable one because you would actually get to see her walk. This one may have a mix of grad and undergrad if her specific school has both, or it may be broken up into separate grad and undergrad ceremonies.

The last tier is the department graduation ceremony. Not all departments have one, but since she is doing a master’s degree, I would bet that there will be one for her program. This consists of just the students in the department, and is generally more low-key, but still nice, especially as it involves the students and professors she has been working with over the course of her degree. Hope that was helpful!

Thank you! That was helpful!!
