Advice : Schools within 2 and a half hours of NYC for me?

I want to try and stay within 2 and a half hours from my home in NY. ( If i really fall in love with a school I am willing to go further, but not plane rides!!)

My stats are
class rank in top 3% approx 3.9 gpa

sats
math- 660
verbal - 600
writing - 560 :/

im retaking my sats on saturday with the hope they will improve so i can get my writing in the 600s and math almost at 700.

i am also going to take the act at the end of the month

im not really sure what i want to major in but i want a school with an education program. also a school with a pretty good math and science programs.

i don't want to go to a school that is huge (i.e, 17,000 students nor a school with 1,000 students)

price is important. im not expecting a school to be 5,000 but as long as they give out a decent amount of aid and merit, i should be satisfied

please help, any suggestions?

feel free to ask more questions because i probably left a lot out. haha thanks again!

With NYC traffic, that’s like a ten mile radius

i dont actually live in manhattan. i dont want to give away my address, but i live in the vicinity

[SUNY New Paltz - School of Education](School of Education | SUNY New Paltz)

There are a lot of liberal arts colleges in Pennsylvania and your 1260 score is in the mid-range for many of them. They may not specifically have education courses, though. If you find those that have mid-range SATs below 1260, you might get merit aid. Ursinus seems provide a lot of merit aid, for example. Look at Gettysburg and Muhlenberg too. University of Connecticut if you can afford the out-of-state tuition, but, of course the NY State schools as well.

colgate
hamilton
wesleyan
bard

Check out Lehigh.

Colgate, Wesleyan and Lehigh would be pretty big reaches for those SAT scores. Probably Bard and Hamilton too, although I’m not as familiar with them.

Your instate public schools (SUNYs) will be by far the cheapest options for you.

University of Scranton is worth a peek.

Neither Colgate nor Hamilton are within 2 1/2 hours of the city.

Manhattan College? Fordham?

I agree with susgeek - SUNY New Paltz

You should consider Ramapo, Mountclair and SUNY Purchase as safety. The SAT score is pretty bad, report here again when you get it up to 21xx so we have a better picture of you. Otherwise Fordham is going to be a reach for you. Of course, if you want to study in Manhattan, CUNY schools, Iona, St. John’s, Adelphi and Pace and on Long Isaland, LIU, Hofstra, SUNY Westbury ect.

All Pa schools will be over your 2.5 hour radius.

Muhlenberg College. 2 hours from NYC. Good merit $.

Not all PA schools are over 2.5 hour limit.

Muhlenberg and Scranton both have good merit money. Both in PA.

Mapquest -Scranton to Manhattan : Travel Estimate: 2 hours 21 minutes / 122.96 miles

St. John’s
Adelphi
Manhattan College
SUNY New Paltz
Marist

The SAT score is NOT “pretty bad”. And she seems to fit in fine for Fordham’s middle 50% stats: Reading 570-670, Math 560-660, Writing 560-660. Fordham’s avg. gpa is 3.7. With the OP’s gpa of 3.9 plus top 3% class rank, she might be ok. The only problem would be that they may not offer her enough merit money to make it affordable.

As two other posters have pointed out, this is definitely not true. Even the colleges around Philadelphia (and there are many) are within 2 1/2 hours.

I kept Fordham off the list because their merit money isn’t great compared to their extremely expensive initial total cost of attending.

Susquehanna
Dickinson
Sarah Lawrence
Lafayette
Skidmore
Union
ithaca

union and ithaca are definitely longer than 2.5 hours
