I'm a high school junior thinking of studying architecture. I want to take AP English, AP Calculus BC and photography but I can only choose 2 of them. Which ones would you recommend? They all have both good and bad sides.AP English and calculus bc are rigorous courses, they would look good on my transcript but especially AP English is very hard.Photography might help me with my portfolio but I'm not sure how much as I will be just a bit more than a beginner.I have already chosen to take an AP art -drawing- course but do you think another art or calculus -or English- course would help me in my application to architecture?

Definitely calculus. Would you be able to keep your grades up if you take AP English? If you don’t take AP English will you take regular English (you should take some sort of English). Photography sounds like the most fun, but not neccessary for architecture school. Take a computer drafting class outside of school if you can.

computer drafting isnt necessary. plus AutoCad is the easiest program in the world to learn. you can figure it out in school

You know all the other kids are going to know it already though. It would be nice not to be behind on the first day of school.

Everyone knows CAD when they get into college? I’d say that maybe 3-5 out of 55 in our class knew any CAD at all at the beginning of the year.

My suggestion is to take the calculus, then go to [Google SketchUp](http://www.sketchup.com) and download the free app. Practice using this software, it is a pretty basic 3D modeler, but I have seen people do amazing things with it and it will introduce you to the concepts of 3D modeling (however don’t put this stuff in your portfolio). By the time you get out of school you will see limited use of Autocad in architect’s offices. At one point we had 50 floating licenses of Auotcad, now we have perhaps 15 with the rest having been switched over to Revit.
