Three questions that a confused future McGill student would be grateful to hear the answers to:

So I've heard that the advising system at McGill isn't very helpful but I'd still like to get some advice from any students in the Faculty of Arts who could recommend some good advisors (if any?). Please feel free to PM me or post here! :)

Also, I'm really confused about registering for classes...how do you know which classes fulfill requirements, etc.? Does someone have to approve your courseload?

I was accepted in the Faculty of Arts...I know that there is the option of "General" and "Arts Legacy". I don't particularly remember applying for a major under "General" when I submitted my application...do I have an opportunity to select one once I accept my offer?

There are “freshman requirements” that you have to fulfill. You must take two classes (6 credits) from three out of four categories - the categories are Science, Languages, Social Sci, and Humanities. You can find the list of classes that fit each category here: [Approved courses](http://www.mcgill.ca/oasis/ba/freshman/approved/) You’re supposed to get your classes approved, but most people don’t. As long as you take classes in the different categories you’ll be fine. These requirements total to 18 credits, so this leaves you with 12 credits (4 classes) of electives for your freshman year. You can take pretty much whatever you want, as long as there aren’t any prereqs for them. This is for the “general” option. You don’t pick a major until second year, so don’t worry about that yet.

Sorry, I should have said that for your electives, they still have to be from the list of approved courses, but they can be from whichever category you like.
