Advising System

I just wanted to know a little more about how the advising system at Rice works. Will there be an advisor to guide you through picking classes for first semester, first year? How can you find an upperclassman student to talk to for advice on specific majors? Any information on advising would be great. Thanks!

anyone...?

So when you get to Rice - during o-week - there is a lot of advising going on. There are 3 specific events that I remember: (they might not be in this order)
1. Departmental fair - each department comes to your college commons, with info on specific classes, majors, lab requirements, etc. They usually have a prof or upperclass student there to answer your questions. This a a great time to ask about specific classes or requirements.
2. Divisional meetings - profs from each school (natural science, social science, humanities, etc.) come to talk about the offerings of their school and answer more general questions. One of the profs who lead the session about the school in which you applied will become you divisional advisior.
3. individual meetings with divisional advisors - you meet one on one with a prof from the school in which you applied. They help you pick your classes for the semester and sign off on your selections. (They have to sign off on your selections each semester until you declare a major - then you advisor in the major will have to sign off).

To find an upperclassman to talk with is not too hard. You will have advisors during o-week, they are great resources - usually, if they don't know the answer to your question, they will have a friend who will. Your divisional advisor might also know someone who you can talk to.

check out the website for the rice office of academic advising if you haven't already. I found the page about which classes you should take for different majors as a freshman very useful.

Also, although this is not on the webpage, you might be interested to know that Rice is getting a new pre-med advisor - she was my psych prof last semester and trust me this is a good thing for pre-meds, she's so nice and helpful.

thanks jenskate!
