THis is a question for the current students:

i will be a freshmen this fall as a biochemistry major and I was wondering how the course selection process will take place. i have begun to look at the course catalog to have a general idea of courses and things. but am i expected to know what classes i want to take when i talk to my advisor? is there enough time?

RELAX! Don't worry! By looking at the catalog, you are already ahead of many people! You will work everything out during the O-week. Your academic advisor and fellow students will help you choose the right courses!

There is nothing wrong with getting a head start. Of course, there will be plenty of time during O-week to figure it out though. Plus you have advisors then.

well i know i just dont wanna come across as like unprepared and like i always plan ahead and that catalog can be a little intimidating...it makes me feel like im so far behind sine there is so many courses and yet i havent even started.

Well of course, that's because you haven't actually started yet. The fact that you have a major chosen is good enough.

You'll probably need the big three, which is PHYS 101/102 (or PHYS 125/126), CHEM 121/122, and MATH 101/102. Those are what a lot of SEs take their freshman year. Do you have AP credit for any of this?

well the AP scores for Calc AB and physics dont come out until july son i am not sure yet. I have the AP credit from general chemistry which i obtained my junior year. i also have the same one for biology. I have the credit for US history and the junior english AP test (i know thats worthless). what are your thoughts of placing out of my chem and bio classes? I am thinking I would place out of first year biology but i am probably going to not take the chem credit and take honors first year chem. I have heard it is harder to go into organic your freshmen year and it has been since freshmen year since i have had chemistry. I need english, calculus, physics, and english for my requirements to enter BCM.

It really depends on how well you know the subjects and how much you want a good GPA. If you are not so sure you know chem and bio well enough for college, it may be a good idea to retake the courses. You would also get a good grade out of it. But that's not for sure.

well i think that the GPA stress has been taken off my back a little because of r/b but im trying to get into the MD/PHD program there so i still have to have something very good to show. i was pretty good in both subjects. i would like to know if lets say, skipping first year of bio by placing out would make me not to as good in latter courses. lets say..cell biology or something like that. i dont think so but im askng since students have gone through this already. chem was pretty good too but i dont want to go into organic my freshmen year, i hear that class is the back breaker so i would like to build up a stronger foundation which cant hurt by taking honors chem. i just havent decided about biology
