Are incoming students assigned advisors? Can an incoming student talk to a prof about being his/her advisor? If that student then takes a CAP course, would he have another advisor or would you just take it as a regular course? Thanks!

All incoming students are assigned an advisor. They tend to be broadly matched by interests. However, one can’t talk a certain professor into becoming one’s advisor until sophomore year. If a professor one really wants as an advisor is teaching a CAP course, one should probably try to get that course. If one takes a CAP course without signing up for it as a CAP course, their advisor will be assigned as normal for students.

Thanks, Uroogla, as usual, you are very helpful!
