AEM Transfer Required Courses

So I tried to ask the Transfer Admissions contact but they were pretty vague/unclear. Feel like I'd get better advice here.

I'm looking to apply for Cornell AEM as an incoming sophomore (I'm currently a freshmen majoring in business at a Top 30 school). I took Calculus 1 my first semester, and I am in the progress of completing Introductory Macroeconomics and Writing Seminar.

My issue is that while I have not taken Microeconomics and a 2nd Writing Course, I got AP scores of 4 on AP English Language and AP Microecon exam, both of which granted me AP Credit and placed me out of the respective Writing Class and Microeconomics classes at my current school. Do I still qualify for transfer admissions? The transfer site stated that the AEM program accepts AP credit for intra-university transfers, shouldn't it be the same for external transfer as well?

Also, is it crucial (in terms of admissions-wise) to take the "Strongly Encouraged" classes like Public Speaking, Chemistry/Physics, Bio? Or do they mean that taking this classes will allow for more course flexibility?

Thanks in advance.

I transferred into AEM too. That “Strongly Encouraged” coursework should honestly read as “Mandatory.” We have a 9% acceptance rate right now. It helps to be as competitive as you possibly can, does it not? And yeah, Bio, Chem/Physics, etc is mandatory. They’re distribution requirements. A lot of my friends hated it, I loved it since I got all A’s in them, which is why I’m also pre-med. In my case, I took a year of Bio, year of Chem, and Calc 1. I’m just a student now, but I think they’d take a kid with all the prereq’s done over you in a heartbeat. Get them done, but definitely clarify with the AP credits. Email CALS.

I see…the thing is that I didn’t consider applying for transfer into Cornell until recently, and the deadline to drop/add courses ended about a week ago. Furthermore, it probably wouldn’t have been possible to take Intro Bio + Chemistry + Public Speaking this semester in conjunction to my required first-year core classes for the business school. I’ll reconsider my decision to apply to AEM, or perhaps consider applying to A&S as an Economics and/or Stats major instead.

That could work. A&S econ is equally competitive. CALS is just big on required coursework. You’d have a lot of the same opportunities in econ as those of us in AEM. Lots of finance type are in it as well. I wouldn’t worry about it. And you could internally transfer to AEM later as well.
