Since I don't know much about American Universities, I would like some advice from you guys.

I am an international student and I would like to go to one of the top universities for my program. I am eyeing top universities like..University of Illinois (urbana) , Texas A&M, and other one that have good international reputation since I won't be in States forever ( I am using this site for ranking - Top 200 - The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2010-2011).

However, the costs are absolutely out of my budget. I heard that some people go to Community Colleges and then transfer to the degree program in the universities. What are Community Colleges? I googled them and found out that they offer 2 year degrees and do general courses and that will count for 2 years of the 4 year degrees. Can anyone tell me more about it? Does anyone have any first hand experience about this? Did all your credits get transferred? Did you have to repeat courses? How was the college life there? I have checked out some of them and found out that you are forced to take a meal plan over there if you live in the Halls.

I have even checked out the universities' website and they do have some kind of partnerships with CCs. Does that mean that all my credits will get transferred (provided that my grades are above C)?

Any more information about my degree program will be really appreciated such as recommended CCs, tops unis, etc!

Thanks!

PS - I went to a British curriculum school ( but it was in the Middle East) so I have O'Levels and A'Levels and no SATs. Do I have to do SATs to get into CCs?

PSS - Do I have to go to a Community College in the same state as the University you intend to go to or can you go to a different one in another state? Sorry for the dumb questions but I seriously don't have any idea about these! :P
