Hello, I’m an international student from Mexico and was accepted into both aerospace engineering programs of SDSU and Pomona. I’m asking the community at large, which school is best in engineering, not only in aerospace; but also in general engineering. Also what job opportunities are there for international students such as myself in the field of engineering. Is it recommended that I go and pursue a master’s degree or even a PhD? I’ve heard that it is not necessary to do so, especially in engineering since most people find good paying jobs right out of school. Lastly when compared to the private University of San Diego, how good is it in engineering when compared to both Pomona and sdsu.
Thank You all in advance!!
CSU Pomona is is not call Pomona, Pomona refers to another college, Poloma College. You can call it Cal Poly Pomona, that’s what we call it. It has a good reputation for engineering. I know an engineer at Boeing local to CPP who studied there.
USD engineering is small but planned to grow. I don’t know anything about it but the college is good and very beautiful. SDSU shoul be fine too. Any ABET program should be good.
There are quite a number of employers in the LA area and defense and bio companies in San Diego but I don’t have much inside knowledge of how difficult it is for internationals to get the company sponsorship and visa.
All schools will give you an excellent education. USD is a private Catholic university versus CPP and SDSU which are public non-demoninational universities, if that makes a difference. Is there a difference in costs?? First of all, you should be in the mind set that you are coming to the US to study. Getting a job is highly unlikely since most employers will seek out US citizens for most job opportuntiies and are not willing to sponsor Internationals for a visa. As an International student, you will only be allowed to work around 20 hrs/week and that would have to be on-campus. If you do not have a car, CPP will be difficult to navigate since very little public transportation is available in the area. SDSU or USD on the other hand, are much easier to navigate (especially SDSU) since the trolley system in San Diego is readily available and SDSU has a trolley station on campus. Come here to get a good education but do not expect much beyond that. Good Luck.
