Affirmative Action?

I've read online that being Asian can really hurt your chances of getting into an Ivy League school. Is this true?

I’m Asian American and I did okay…diversity matters to a certain point, but what schools are looking for are individuality and how you can contribute to the class.

They look beyond race…they look at your personal achievements, skills, and talents that will help make your class awesome. Besides Penn is 25% Asian American, so the numbers are in your favor. Compared to the nation, we are definitely over represented.

It’s called holistic review now, get with the times.

“Asian can really hurt your chances”. No, being an applicant who is similar to a huge pool of other applicants makes one un-interesting. How many piano & violin playing, tennis playing Asian kids do you know? one or both parents highly professional. Super solid in math/science (brutal stereotype, I know – but you get my drift) –

I was an immigrants’ kid – parents worked in restaurants. I went to an inner city HS, got top (but not perfect) GPA, decent test scores, but was a thorough leader in my majority black high school. Got accepted at all schools applied. Matriculated at an HYP.

It’s not being Asian that’s the knock – it’s the ability to stand out from the crowd of other applicants.
