Hello all,
I’ll keep it short. I’m a New Yorker looking to transfer with an Associate’s degree in the fall of this year/spring of next year. I’m interested in FSU, but I know I’d be looking at OOS tuition costs. I’m eligible for large amounts of financial aid due to my parents’ income and lack of assets. I may be interested in settling down in Florida, so I would also like to finish my education down there as well.
Are there any universities you can recommend with strong financial aid?
@LiberaCivitas - You might look at U of Tampa. They have decent fin aid and some good programs.
Transfer students don’t get much aid. If you’re low income, you may qualify for a Pell grant of up to $5k and a NYS Tuition Assistance grant of ~$5k (awarded only if you attend a college in NYS). You can take the federal student loan ($7500/year), and if you work summers you can raise $3k/year. That would cover the cost of a SUNY and you’d graduate with about ~$15k of debt. That’s a great deal.
If you go OOS, you’d only get the ~$5k Pell and $7500 federal student loan. I don’t know if that’s enough to pay for an OOS school. Can your parents contribute anything?
University of Tampa costs $37,000 a year. The school does not guarantee to meet full need. Transfer students get limited scholarships.
How much can you pay? And why FL?
What has changed since you wrote THIS thread?

@LiberaCivitas
It doesn’t sound like you can go OOS. You’re a transfer student and unless you apply and get into one of the few schools that give great aid to transfer students, you won’t be able to afford the school.
I don’t think any Florida school gives great aid to low income transfer students who don’t live in FL.
Flagler is a private school but tuition is low.
Your cheapest options are probably going to be the public schools. There are not going to be transfer scholarships but the schools might offer some need based aid. There is cheap housing near a lot of the schools.
Check out UCF, FIU, FAU.
How old are you?
Any chance you can graduate, go to Florida, live on your own and work for a year, then apply to a Florida public university?
