Will UF negotiate tuition after scholarships and financial aid are announced?

I’m OOS and did not receive an academic scholarship and will probably not get any financial aid except for maybe a small loan. Has anyone ever heard of UF negotiating tuition at all? I really want to go to UF, but I don’t think my parents will go for $43,000/year. I got accepted to 9 other colleges, including privates, and all will cost less than $43,000 a year (including U Miami). Even if they knocked off a few thousand a year, my parents might go for it.

Sorry but UF has little to no aid for OOS and at a recent admitted student day I was at a lady basically asked the same thing you did and the financial aid advisor just suggested she take loans/look for local scholarships.

I haven’t heard of much either (though obviously we are in Florida so it’s not something we have actively thought about).

What makes you want UF so much?

UF is a very good school and has everything I am looking for in a college. Also, it’s not in NYS. The cost of living here is insane and I don’t want to be stuck here the rest of my life. College is a good opportunity to escape, though it’s gonna be expensive.

Did you run the NPC before applying? What made you think UF would give an OOS student financial aid? Most state publics take in full pay OOS students to make money from them.

Yes, did all that. Other OOS schools are at least willing to give something. Also, most aren’t almost $23,000 a year more for OOS.

You have nothing to lose by asking, but be prepared the answer is NO. You have other viable choices so pick one that’ll suit your needs.

OP, have you visited UF?

It’s a great school but not worth that high OOS premium - imho - barring unusual circumstances (wealthy parents, perfect program, etc.). Also, UF is mostly in-state students from what I understand. Are you OK with that?

You’re right, it can’t hurt to ask. I’m sure the answer will be “no” which doesn’t really make sense economically for them. Will they chance losing an OOS for not cutting let’s say $3,000 - $5,000 off per year. They’re still gonna make $18, 000 - $20,00 per year more than they would from a Florida resident. We’ll see…

They have people on the waitlist waiting to take your place who are not going to balk at paying full price. That’s why they won’t have to budge.

Any school, other than a SUNY school, is going to cost me at least $37,000/year. The question is the extra $6,000 it looks like it’s going to cost me to go to UF.

Good point!

There’s nothing wrong with a SUNY school. Sure, it’ll be cold and the campus won’t be as nice as a southern school. But the degree is the same and you can get a job anywhere you want to work after graduation. I got my degree at a NY school and have lived and worked all over. It is about you, not your school.

I know, there are many very good SUNY schools. Both of my parents graduated from SUNY; however, I really want to leave NY and they are encouraging me to do so. NYS is going down the tubes. Now is a good time to get out.

UF does offer a limited number of OOS merit scholarships ($8k, $12K and $20K a year), but those should have already been sent out.

It didn’t hurt to apply to UF ($30 application fee), in case you may have been offered on of these scholarships.

Good Luck!
