Afraid I chose the wrong college! Is it too late to switch?

Hi everyone, I was genuinely hoping May 1st would mark the end of my endless worrying about choosing the right college. I was stuck between Boston College, which had been my DREAM school for so long, and Northeastern University, which I only seriously began to consider in the spring. Ultimately I choice NU, because they had a lot to offer me as an undeclared student. I made this decision with my brain, and in a way ignored my heart. I had my parents, friends, and teachers all urging me to choose NU, and so I felt like I had to. However, it’s not the end of June, nearly two months after making the decision, and I still feel my stomach drop a little every time I even hear BC being mentioned. It’s upsetting and discouraging to me that I even feel this way. Shouldn’t I be excited to be going to a prestigious school with so much to offer me in the way of academics?? I can’t help but feel upset whenever I hear of someone who will be a freshman at BC in the fall. I feel a bit jealous, meanwhile I had the option to choose to go there myself!

I feel like i should throw this out there:
My main reason for not choosing BC was that I am restricted in what I can study. Being an admit to the school of arts and sciences, I can in NO way major or minor in anything busniness or information systems, which are two potential interests of mine. Whereas at NU I have full access to ALL majors.
Is it ridiculous of me to be rethinking everything just because my heart is saying BC? After all, I always thought this was a decision that is best made with my head.

I guess what I’m leading up to is: Is it common/possible for a student to switch schools this late?

@shannon14, both are great schools and both are in Boston so nothing missing there either - time to embrace NEU and get ready to have a great time!

Many people suffer some “buyers remorse” after choosing a college. You made a decision and now it is time to stop looking in the rear view mirror and start looking ahead.

You had good reasons to turn BC down. It is ridiculous to pay for a college where you can’t study your area of interest. You did the right thing.

I think that this is a VERY good reason for you to have chosen Northeastern. A lot of students change majors after starting university (more than half), and quite a few people end up later working in an area that was a minor rather than a major. The internship opportunities at Northeastern are also a good reason to go there.

Also, both are very good universities. Both are pretty much in the same area. Buyer’s remorse is very common in many phases of life (universities, cars, houses, spouses, …). You have however made a very good choice and I think that you should go there and plan to work hard and do well.

Probably one of the toughest decisions you have ever had to make in your young life. Embrace it and own it. Sounds like you did due diligence. We all second guess ourselves on the hard decisions, especially when you have such great options!

What you are experiencing is sooooo common. Your brain is what you should listen to. Being rational menas you are considering your future and it sounds like NEU is the best way to get where you need to go. BC wouldn’t happen now even if you wanted it to. Stop thinking about the what if and start immersing yourself in all that NEU has to offer. Look up all the clubs, actvivites, courses, etc…and remind yourself of why you made your choice.

You made the right choice! Maybe the reason you feel bad when others mention BC is that you were accepted to Arts & Sciences rather than Management. It would be great if you could study business or information systems at BC but when it comes down to it, you need to study at an institution that can support your interests. NEU gives you the opportunity to explore different majors. I think that having those options will make you much happier in the long run.
