I am both, so what would be better to use? Does it really matter? All the schools im looking at are +/- 2% of each other. Should i go with whatever is less? or are they looking for something? Is it bad to change it for different schools or should i keep it consistant? I remember a guy said a few weeks ago that qualified black men were in demand or something, so i should put african american. what do you all think?

Neither. Go by your own merit. Then you can feel you truly deserve to have gotten into wherever you'll be attending.

I certainly don't think you should hide your ethnicity, like the previous poster said. But in terms of which you put down, I don't think it would make a tremendous difference. I would probably stick to one or the other, just on the off chance that colleges realized and became suspicious (even though ultimately it wouldn't matter since you are truly both, it would still reek of playing the system). Also, it seems a waste of energy to, say, send out the commonapp separately just to change your ethnicity.
So I would recommend putting one, it doesn't matter which, and sticking to it.

they're basically the same.....

"they're basically the same"

no they aren't

argh. dont emphasize your urm too much. then you just seem like a person who milks too much out of your race. besides, your racial background never prevented you from acheiving your goals (as in a disability). State it but dont overkill your background.

choose the one that you ACTUALLY consider yourself.
the one that someone says are you white?
and you respond, no im ________.
cmon man, dont pull the race card for college :P

But if youre going to anyway, either are fine. probably black is a better way to go

I agree with gnrfan. My mom was friends with a very smart black woman in graduate school who complained that people often felt that she only got into the school becuase of her race. That said, I understand how much pressure there is to get into a good college, and every last bit helps. Since your username is "afro" it seems that you consider yourself African-American. If you're going to disclose your race, take COlsen's advice. Just keep in mind that you don't want to feel like you just cheated the system to get into college solely because you're an URM. Good luck!

Sounds like you identify yourself as black, so I would go with black--the difference in admissions boost between blacks/hispanics is miniscule.
